Anyone have any ideas on how to increase engine spark for gas?I have a WB statesman caprice..308 t400 etc..nice original car but,it has trouble starting on gas.I try to start it on gas,it doesnt even seem to fire, then put it on petrol and it starts but runs bad because its mixed fuels then I switch it to gas and wait till it clears up.Im getting a bit sick of this especially in the morning going to work at 5 am.So I think its obviously getting a gut full of gas ,so if I can upgrade the spark ,it might actually just start on gas.It has one of those big cap dizzys with the module on but what appears to be a standard coil..ANY IDEAS? (be nice!)P.S. Yes I already have new leads and plugs on it. Jim in Adelaide...Hindsight is bad vision! Edited by user Friday, 15 January 2010 2:51:11 AM(UTC)

I have a ht 186 that is on duel fuel and the bloke who did the conversion said to always start and finish on petrol . After it warms up I switch it to gas and back to petrol when I am almost at work and run straight petrol on one trip a week to keep that system working and give the motor the lurication benifits koz gas dries things out a bit . If u dont like using petrol then just get them to make it run on straight gas perhaps .

Jim, the best dizzy for you is the blue motor HEI (electronic) dizzy from a WB or VC-VL, so if your WB still has its one on it, keep it.
If yours is the old style carby cover with a filter off to the side, it is a draw-through style, and you need to generate enough engine vacuum to pull open the diaphragm to get the gas flowing into the inlet. This is where the cold-start problem lies, as the poor old starter has to crank & crank to build vacuum.
If yours is like that, you could look into seeing if it can be fitted with a primer. We had an LTD with one of those primers, and you turn the ignition on, press a button on the dash beside the petrol/gas switch & gauge, and it worked a solenoid to give it a shot of gas, so when you cranked it, it fired up almost instantly.
Another thing I found - we had a 308 straight gas HZ in the family, and it would crank & crank for ages before firing - put a VS commodore reduction starter on it (had to adjust the extractors a little) and it cranked the engine over faster, and made for much less cranking time before it kicked over. Thats with no fuel system at all - purely straight gas, and no primer button either.
Cheers,

I am in the process of doing a "process of elimination" with a problem I have. When the weather gets hot my 308 HX ute wont run on gas.
I have just changed my leads to gas compatible leads and changed my coil from a standard to a electronic ignition coil.
My ute used to take about 8-12 sec of turning over before it would fire. Now it fires straight away.

Billy, thanxz .I have all that stuff on it ,but i am going to do some other things as it still has this problem,i think its a weak spark and gas vacuum combined problem...cheers

It took me a while to figure it out, but the primer button when starting from cold solved most of my probs. I prefer not to start on petrol as apparently the petrol can wash the oil from the cylinder walls before the engine fires up. Putting an HEI system in also helped a lot, now from cold the engine starts after cranking for half a second. No more flat batteries hooray!

Do you know what the current draw is for those starters compared to the original HZ one?
