just wondering for curosity sake, the HQ-WB 6 cyl and V8 sedan/coupe/statesman trimatic and manual crossmembers are the same right?

are the TH350 and TH400 crossmembers the same?

are is there a differance between a crossmember from a 308 TH400 and a 350 TH400?

now i know that all you need to do to modify a crossmember to fit a TH400 is just elongate the gearbox mount holes

no difference between 308 t400 and a 350 t400 (same box for both) Dave.
others i think are the same,tri, 4speed 6 and 8.
I dont think you can elongate the holes. I bought and chopped a statesman one to fit a t400(308 )in my van. when i got them together they were very different.

thanks jim, yeah the TH400 crossmember is something ive heard ALOT of mixed stories about, thats why id thought id ask

Hi Dave , to fit the van I had to cut about an inch off each end but for a sedan they bolt straight in ..Im pretty sure.

TH350 is a very different crossmember. TH400 is close to trimatic but holes are in differentplace and they are strengthened across the webbing. Some say the TH400 one sits differently too, but not sure on that.

ahh ok, id always assumed the TH350 crossmember were the same as the TH400

i modified a standard HQ crossmember once to fit a TH400, it was easy, from memory all i did was just drilled 2 holes

so in the sedan/statesman/coupe range from HQ-WB 6 or 8 there were 3 different crossmembers

standard, TH350 and TH400

does anyone have any pics of them for comparison?

there are actually 5
1) 6 and V8 trimatic/aussie for sedan+wagon + stato
2) 6 and V8 trimatic/aussie for ute+ van+ tonner
3) T400 for ute+van+tonner
4) T400 for sedan+wagon+ stato
5) T350 for sedan+wagon+ stato

there is no such thing as a factory T350 crossmember for a Ute/van/tonner

Not quite right Adam. Late HZ 308 auto vans, utes and tonners plus early WB 308 ute, van or tonner would have a TH350. Ive never seen one but I have a May 1979 Acacia Ridge XU3 ute recorded with M41 on the BODY plate that would go very close to having a TH350 fitted. Ive only ever seen late WB commercial with 308 trimatic but their existence tells me that earlier ones would also have existed with M38.

i was refering to sedan/coupe/wagon/statesman as the different crossmembers, but yes your right the ute/van/tonner crossmembers included doubles the number of different crossmembers

i actually had a bid at that XU3 May 1979 ute - which ended up in Hobart.
it was a T400 ute..M41 plated

i would like to know if anyone has ever seen a commercial factory T350 crossmember or lateHZ / early WB with M38?
i have never seen or heard of one either.

When HZ changed to TH350 M41 stayed on the BODY plate. It wasnt until WB that M38 appeared on the BODY plate. May 1979 was the changeover month so that ute could have been either. TH350 HZ or WB commercials would have existed. Sandman vans were made until late 1979 and there would have been a 308 auto (TH350). BO6 vans and tonners were still being built too and many of these were 308 auto.

i am just wondering if there is a GM part number for the T350 crossmember into ute / van / tonner?

if it was an option for holden commercials for 3 years (mid 1979 to mid 1982), you would think that someone would have seen one??

Old thread I know, but there is no point making a new one.

Expanding on post 6 and 7 in this thread it appears there is at least 6 different crossmembers. At this stage I am still not sure what differs between HQ with TH400 and HJ-HZ with TH400. The part numbers are different so something changes. At the moment I have a suspicion that it will be a matter of the rear mount slots moving across a bit to accommodate the tilt of the engine like in a HK-HG.

So in theory there will be at least the following:

HQ-WB passenger Aussie 3/4spd and trimatic.
HQ-WB commercial Aussie 3/4spd and trimatic.
HQ passenger TH400.
HQ commercial TH400 (for the few of these GMH built).
HJ-HZ passenger TH400.
HJ-HZ commercial TH400.
HZ-WB passenger TH350.
HZ-WB commercial TH350.

I am unsure if the crossmembers made for HQ-HJ CKD South African cars with Chevrolet 6cyl and TH350 will exhibit the same difference to a HZ-WB TH350 crossmember that a HQ TH400 one does to a HJ-HZ TH400 example. I'd need to see a parts book or an original car to know. Does anyone here have access to one of those imported SA cars over here with the Chevy 6cyl engine in it? Looking to see if the engine is on a tilt like a 350 in a HQ is (you can clearly see the thickness difference on HQ 350 mount adapters like you can with HK-HG SBC ones). You'd think if the auto 250ci 6cyl ones are on a tilt then the manual ones would be too, I think these are Aussie 3spd though.

I have also heard rumours over the years that TH400 crossmembers are bent differently to the other ones, in such a way that the rear mount location is at a different height. I personally checked a HJ TH400 one against a trimatic one and they are pretty much the same bend. It is possible those rumours are referring to HQ TH400 though, and this may also be the difference.

Very true. I cannot remember how they differ though. Does the Muncie on these mount the same as a TH350?
