I cant see why they wouldnt be if they exit behind the rear door/opening window...? Trucks have shields on them so that helps with the legal side afaik.

Might depend on where you are located and whos doing the inspection (if youre going for rego.) I had sidepipes on a Hot Rod, great for short trips, drove me crazy on long trips. 69 Corvette is the only year that came out with sidepipes, although many others have been fitted with them.

Im pretty sure the 64 to 72 Corvettes had factory sidepipes and cobras, then they started that emission stuff, anyway that doesnt matter , as I dont have one of them..(boo hoo!).Im just wondering what happened to them? Are they still available?,what would they cost now?,with the price hike on chroming and steel and labour ETC.I remmember aftermarket ones called "Thrush" they were the best I reckon.

My neighbour had a Cobra with side pipes but they couldnt exit out the side, the tip was fake and there was another pipe on the inside that went to the back.

I think you cant have exhaust blow towards padestrians or the footpath and it has to exit past the last pasanger door to prevent fumes entering the vehicle.

Probably different for each state. Got some on the pano, and I made sure they were legal. I think the regulations state they have to be a certain height above the road and infront of the rear wheel. Basically you cant have them on a four door as they are too close to the passenger door. Utes and vans are OK. I can post some photos if you wanted? They look pretty awful, which I kind of like... ;)

The rule in NSW, as I understand it, is that the exhaust outlet must point downwards & exit a certain distance rearward of the rearmost opening window. This creates a drama on Holden panel vans, because they treat the upper tailgate as an opening window. Utes have no problems. Falcon vans (with barn doors) pass with no problems.

Odd. One of the reasons I switched to sidepipes was to lessen the exhaust intake through the back. Would have thought that pipes sticking out the back would be worse for this?

You are correct, I was only quoting the NSW RTA ruling.

Oh OK, not what Ive got then. SA Regulations are probably different to Vic anyway. Have you had a chat to your local exhaust guy? he should know. I imagine vehicle inspectors not liking the Hooker style pipes due to the burn risk. Theyd look pretty nice though. Mine below:

I think some of you are mixing up "side-exit" pipes with sidepipes aka lakes pipes or lake pipes, named for the dry lakes ie Bonneville etc.

Typical lakes pipes:

They are the ones!To me they look wicked.apparently ,you only hook up one exhaust to them, and some use a combination of the top van(also very nice!)and the long chrome part is fake and they come out like the top pictured van ,but look like the bottom one?Can anyone confirm this?
