I saw a HZ ute at a wreckers today and the tags said it originally had a 253 and 4 speed floor shift but seating cap of 3, i thought that if you wanted a floor shift you needed to option buckets, so anyway does anyone have any pics of what it would have looked like? was it just the shifter coming out of the floor with a rubber boot around it? curiosity got the better of me :)

Plenty of 4spd bench seat HQ-WB were made. The shifter has a dogleg in it and a rubber boot as you say. You used to see heaps of panel vans as 6cyl 4spd with bench, and lots of tonners as well. I have tags here off a 308 M21 HQ van with a 3 seat capacity which is a pretty rare combo. Most 308 4spd HQ-HZ commercials were Sandmans and hence had buckets and console, but 253 4spd and bench is much more common.

My WB Kingswood has a 253 with M20 and seating capacity of 3 and GTS dash (all factory fitted). Pretty common I think and my brother has the same.

I had a 73 HQ Tonner that was 308 4sp with bench seat back in the early 80s. Someone had swapped the linkages around on the 4sp as fourth gear was up top where third usually is, it was a pain in the butt at first but once I got used to it was actually a good idea as it was more comfortable for the middle passenger and they were not likely to knock it out of gear with their knees.

Was it a factory 308 1-tonner? I wasnt aware of any being built prior to HJ. You couldnt even get a V8 HQ tonner until around 1973 model.

I learnt to drive in WB 202 4spd van that my old man had. It was only 2 years old. Works well with long legs (I was 65" at 15), but its a bit tougher when the seat is right forward.

Thanks for the replys, you learn something new every day. i didnt know that they were that common, i have seen a few cars with 4 speeds and bench seats but just assumed they had been converted from column shifts. i guess that over the years people would have changed the bench to buckets, as in the case of the ute i saw.

Yes, factory L31 M21 with bench seat. My first boss bought a HQ tonner off his cabinet maker mate in 1980 who ordered the car new from the factory (Acacia Ridge) in 74, it was a white tonner with black trim, L32, M20, bucket seats, console, arm rests, carpet and GTS dash. Now according to the parts manuals etc. this vehicle should not have been possible, I guess you really could get whatever you wanted back then with enough money and knowing the right people.

HJ-WB 308 tonner did exist in numbers, but that is the first 308 HQ I have ever heard of. I think the console is the odd bit about the 253 one your first boss had, possibly the arm rests too.
