Personally I got my Sandman because of the nostaglia and what it means to me. I am not wanting to preserve history, or even rewind the clock. It is a personal choice and the memories I have from my teens in the late 70s. Exactly as Byron notes it is uniquely iconic of the Aussie culture at that time. vans are cool my 1980 wb with hx statesman front does the job great for swapmeets and drive in nights or the odd sleep over.

I bought my HQ van because I thought F#$%k I may never see another windowless HQ,but I have...Damn.!

my HQ van is a ex ambulance, so it has a bed in it already, lol the other really cool features are, it has is a full fibreglass liner on the inside (head lining) and stainless steel cupboards everywhere, including over the drivers/passengers head, barn doors on the back and a extra door on the side it can also legally carry 4 people, and everyone has a seat and a seatbelt, the seat in the back folds down to flat with the floor

Im not into restoring a car to make money, but Im not into wasting it either. Hence my starting point for an "improved factory" vehicle will be a premium performance vehicle (in my case GTS327 and GTS350). Im not saying I wouldnt own another less valuable or desirable (to the market) vehicle, I just wouldnt restore one as the return if I had to sell it is not as good an investment. Id rather buy a totally original vehicle untouched or a fully restored one. Its a balance isnt it. For me the satisfaction of the whole project is the reward - I dont care what what my HJ Sandman will be valued at when its done, but it still needs to be balanced out with a budget. I only restore what needs doing ,so many cars are over restored and the owners wont drive them except onto a trailer.
I have a 75 HJ statesman it was a one owner for over 30 years with all books and papers from new and is matching numbers , the interior was good enough with just a good clean and only some cosmetic work on the out side , so this will be only a part resto car, I`m happy to keep it mainly unrestored to drive on club events.
statesmans are not worth big dollars but enjoy a following of people to keep prices steady.

Cloudy, exactly the same as the HJ im considering. All it needs is a Holley removed and quaddy put back on, and some cosmetics.

my wife asked the same question when i brought it, lol
all i know about its history is after its life as a ambulance it became the NSW coroners car
so it would be safe to assume there has been a large number of dead people in it!
