Hey Guys,
My wife and I love getting in our 1975 302 XB, but when we went out for lunch on Australia Day we never wanted to get back in after a stinking hot day so we have both decided to install air conditioning.
I think the XA's are the same as an XB (not too sure if the XC is) and ZD- ZF-ZG ford Fairlane maybe the same too.
If you want to sell a full air con kit to fit into my XB, you can contact me on [email protected]

Cheers Phill.

Hey mate, xa and xb are the same , xc is different, you will also need aircon switch panel and short glovebox to go along with it, you will also need to cut out the extra vents out of your dash and get vents to suit including ducting etc. The more I think about it the more stuff you need, compressor, condensor coil , reciever dryer unit, 3 groove lower pulley.........probably forgotten stuf as well. I still have a full setup out of a xb fairmont but am really looking to get rid of it as a complete unit including dash. Checked ya profile and it doesnt state where ya live ?.

Hi Docktor

Thanks for getting back to me, I live in Sydney and I hope you do too, sorry for not mentioning that but if you live in country NSW I would be prepared to drive for a pickup! if not we maybe able to arrange something else, I would like to dismantle the whole kit if I can because then I would know how it all goes back together.

Cheers Phill.

Hi Dcktor,
Hmm, well, ok, well I can ask my wife to go for a drive with many clothes and shoes (like always) in the boot and find ourselfs in Melbourne, lol, but that wont be for a while, and your dash etc might be better condition than mine! I would like to ask you how much do you want for the kit? so if you can email me a contact number I can call you or just stick with the emails, what ever you prefer, so we can put this square peg in a round hole,
oh! I just thinking if you would be prepared to box it up if I was to arrange a delivery?

Cheers Phill.

Oh if I only had the cash. Id really like factory air in my XB too. The vinyl has been a tad sticky this sumer.
What sort of cash were you wanting Henry and where in QLD are you again? This is a pipe dream the way my finances are at the moment. Havent even got that much to trade except a set of reconditioned XB GT tramp rods and a rear wing. Suppose it cant hurt to ask.

Sob sob about 15 years ago I chucked out an underdash A/C unit complete. It followed the contours of the XA/XB dash and I swear it was "Selectaire" brand (dealer fitted maybe?).

I couldnt even get $50 for it and I was moving house so it had to go.

I bought a factory aircon dash from Ebay about 18 months ago, including the crashpad, glove box and guages for $450, was a GT dash too, so though I thought it expensive at the time, I think it was pretty good buying now.
Just be careful on these complete aircon setups on Ebay as more often than not they are missing the aircon/heater tap, which is a pretty rare part. There is regularly one on Ebay for sale that a bloke wants $238 for, so as you can see, an original factory setup wont be cheap, probably going to cost you near on a thousand bucks by the time you get everything.
Keeping in mind that there is a very good chance that some of the parts on these complete setups will be stuffed anyway, so think good and hard before plunging on a set if half of it will end up in the bin.
Compressors didnt change for several years after XB, the same into the XD/XE model, I believe, so source a later model one of those as its probably done less miles.
Ducting is hard to come by and draws good money but if you are going to keep the car just use that flex tube you buy at bunnings, heaps cheaper and easier to fit.

I read somewhere that you can use a heater tap off a later model falcon. Was it an XD or EA or something. Know anything about that one Craig? Ive got my brother on the look out for old fairlanes. Hes out west a bit and comes across the odd gem in a paddock. I just cant stretch my dollars enough at the moment so Ill have to be patient or just learn to deal without air like Ive done for the past 24 years of owning the car.

No Paul I havent, but I cant see any reason why it couldnt, even if you did have to do a bit of tweaking and fabricating. I thought seriously about doing just that until I stumbled on a NOS aircon tap for $35, still in its box.
Also, a mate of mine who restores these cars for a living has more times than I can remember told me that aircon set-ups of that era were crap, so you could go all out on getting that perfect factory setup and then have a critical part crap itself and your back to square one trying to locate another part!
If you are building a car that will be driven, go for a set-up that looks the same or very similar to original but is reliable and replacement parts can be found easily. The expense just doesnt justify the outcome for this bit of kit.

Hi guys Im back in the hunt for air conditioning.

Docktor, thanks for giving us the link to the one you found on ebay but the seller took it off before the auction ended, I spoke to the seller on the phone and he only lives 15mins away and he dident want me to come to his house so I can have a look before I made a bid ( I do respect peoples privacy though ) but he was asking for a very high price that I thought he was joking at first!

So Henry Heaven do you still want to sell your unit? my only problem is finding the right courier.
Cheers Phill.

Try backloading it on a greyhound bus. Bus companies used to do that or has that been now stopped as it made too much sense?

Hey docktor I respect your price as you have all the other good stuff with it, but at the end of the day Im just looking for the A/C.
Paul your idea is very good, and I might do some research when I find a spare min later, but Henry Heaven is right I had to jump through hoops asking couriers to send a old dragtser push bike from Mel to Syd, never again and it cost more than the bike.

If anyone can help with this hurdle it would be greatley appreciated.

Ps, Oh, as I found out "its best to beg for forgivness than ask for permission"
Cheers Phill.
