The HQ section is not good with many porkies being told in the pages I read at length. I looked at it yesterday and whilst the book itself appears real flash the HQ info is incorrect in many ways.

please explain what you have found i have ordered this book as it was forwarded by warren turnball so i wouldnt think things were wrong in it!!!!

A lot of the stuff in this book is about what went on behind the scenes, so my knowledge of some of these things is zero.

I supplied a lot of info, made some changes, and tried to make it as accurate as possible.

I would doubt there are no errors, even our book had them. But also when it first came out some claimed there were a lot more erros that there were.

I think Ben and I proof read ours for over 12 months, back and forth. Sometimes when a change is made it brings in another.

On p96 and again later they say that the dual range speedos were standard from March 1973. HQ owners know this is not true. p97 has the options chart with half the options wrong. p98 is real crazy with things like diffs having a ratio like 3.36:4. p99 reads like Just Holdens magazine - simply useless trying to ID a car correctly. If that was the case then why so many mistakes and why so much information that differs to what is in the bible? Id love to see an answer to that now.

Monaro magic is a great book for pictures but that is about it in terms of getting the nitty gritty right on a particular Monaro.

As people start reading about their Monaro model they are bound to find the same as me.

Yes I wrote part of the Monaro Fact/Monaro Story, for which you often remind me, and I read a lot of this book before it went to print, advising Norm of changes etc.

To answer your concerns.

P96, I am not that familiar when the speedo on HQs changed, so left that with Norm. (I am not an HQ owner)

P97, is the basic list of options in the press release to give the press some idea of the cost of popular options. As you would be aware, these prices also change often. This is the reason that Ben and I did not include this in our book and I also advised Terry not to include these in his book, (Check page 29 of 60 years of Holden) Weights are another, in the HK workshop manual it lists a dozen or so weights for options, but not ever one. There is always the temptation to put these in, but then people ask what about the others. Maybe you should ask Holden why they did not supply the cost of every option in their press release.

P98, I think you will find that this is a number sequence thing in some word processors, you will note 3, 2 and 1 above, so would suggest that the programm has gone into number sequencing.

P99, looks nothing like the Monaro id page in Just Holden but almost identical to the HQ parts book, and not like the Monaro Story section either.

P100, When I saw the id page on the HQ it was to be all on one page, see page 22 on how the HK is pressented. Obviously when Norm expanded it he simply cut and pasted the models onto each page. As I had already checked it then this was not going to be a major deal. Does it really matter that he has a particular model listed at a plant that did not produce that model? Would be more of a sin to leave a model off an assembly plant. The HQ parts book list H5 - 9 for the Sydney plant but no HQ has H5 in it VIN, so get up GM-H for that one.

So if that is all that is wrong with the HQ section I am sure 99% of people will be happy. (there are a couple of others but I will let you find those)

Also this is not a nitty gritty facts book, its a coffee table book. If you expect every automotive book coming out to be the Monaro facts/Story you are going to be disappointed with every book you buy.

It is the option codes that I object to, not the prices. Who said anything about the prices? L33? WTF. M21 is not an L6 transmission. M22 does not go with a 308. JL2 is the disc brake option. A02 is the windscreen option. N66 is for the wheels. U21 is the sports instrument cluster. U63 is the push button radio. PW6 for the tyres that are D70H14. Ans so on. All this is from the Monaro book (the good one) and all Holden paperwork I have.

I just wonder at the outrage if this was a telephone book or something else with vital information that relies on a zero tolerance element because there it is either right or wrong.

So how come a proof reading didnt spot it along with a million other errors in spelling and the like that I havent drawn attention to?

Remember that the purpose of a forum such as this is for people with a common interest (Holdens and Monaros) to discuss matters. When someone who proclaims to have an interest in Monaros goes and belittles them then they should expect the consequences.

It wasnt the look I was referring to, but the amount of bull and misleading information in it. What will happen when a reader uses this reference to make a claim about their Monaro at an event such as a car show or on another forum? Facts are facts and the truth is always the truth. Histroy also should not be altered for any reason.

Warren, I appreciate your response here however, there isnt enough room on this forum to list the "couple of other" HQ related errors as you put it. And then there would be the remainder of the book. Wow! Maybe Dr Terry should start a new quiz for the person who finds the total number of fluffs in your work in this book? The total would be very high I would think, a bit like guessing how many jelly beans in the jar. The book should have been a picture book with limited story attached and left at that. This book will be collectable for the wrong reasons.

Hi Al, Yes and Im looking forward to chatting with fellow HQ enthusiasts such as yourself. Bring your comb and we can both learn a few new things. I am using the judging sheets off the Monaro website to make sure my car does well in the judging. So far I am on track not to lose a point according to the sheets. I want positive proof that I have a car worthy of what I want Shannons to insure it for. What about yourself?

ahhhh, at the end of the day, who is really the person to say what is right and what is wrong?? who was there when all these cars were being put together? who was there at dealerships when warranty stuff was happening and parts where changed and those parts came from different suppliers?? does the judge know the story before taking off points due to the wrong bolts?? ajax went on strike that day, their JIT was not around, so a different bolt supplier came to the rescue, so this monaro is not original now, "take 50 points off"
there is just so much "grey" areas when it comes to judging and what is factory and what isnt etc etc etc, and there too many conflicting stories of factory builds etc, thus taking the fun out of cars
norm should write a book about my life, be a heap more interesting, but not as dramatical as monaro dudes

Exactly. The book is what it is, a light read behind the scenes look at the development of the Monaro through the years. A few typos and mistakes are part and parcel of life. Sh!t happens.

yes I will be there but my car is not a nut and bolt correct car.... it still has its original weathered 39 year old paint on it... my car will be in either the modified class or I will choose not to have it judged... I havent decided yet....I have attended every nationals since Bathurst in 2004....I attend to catch up with people who have the same appreciation for the 37 body style as I do... chew the fat have a beer have a laugh and admire some great cars... when people put inordinate amounts of time and effort into a car or a book for that matter... picking holes into someones pride and joy to make a point is not admirable at all in my opinion...

Now I wouldnt know Norm Darwin if i fell over him.... but you dont put together a book like to make a quick buck.... the guy has written many books on Holden related subjects so I admire him for his passion and dedication to the brand,,,

Finally I will have a beer and a chat with you at the nationals with Den... but if you start picking the s*** out of my car... dont be offended If I walk away mid sentence..
