In HQ, the GTS models were finished in Warrigal black and later Tuxedo black - a proper black and not the black mix you see on other cars. Ben Stewart told me that this was for a certain standard of look under the hood of the premuim products in the line up. Im pretty sure he said that this was also done in previous models as well back to HT or HK. I have the engineering specs from him for HQ on this so I would say that he also has this for the earlier Monaros. The engineering paperwork makes special mention of the under hood area with regard to paint finish but is very detailed and hard to follow in some areas. I know this doesnt answer your direct question but HQs are the same as HG Holdens in many paint areas.

Yes Ben Stewart told me that GTS /Brougham are Warrigal Black which you can still get mixed up. When that was painted in the day the lead paint use to flow out flat as a tack and also the heat they used .
All other HKTG models (belmont kinga etc.. )apparently are the greyish colour you see . He did tell me the name of it but i cant remember at the moment (its not in Dulux colour books though ) .
And yes i know that colour varies etc..
I have the same trouble explaining the engine colours with people, and VHT and others have copied the colour from an old engine that has lost all its orange pigments and gone pink . I think Motospray or someone may finally have the colour reasonably close now . I used to sell it in cans but PPG/dulux have just stopped selling spraying enamel apparently .
If your car is 40 years old an you dont want to keep it as survivor or if you have to restore it as it was missing etc...the only way to correctly do it is to go by the original formula IMO, even though your car may have copped something different by a worker on the assy line .
In the case of the engine bay colour , if yours is a particular shade of grey and you want to keep it the same you will need to colour match it as there is no formula in any Dulux books i have seen , only in the original Holden engineering records so i would imagine.
I know HKTGs produced in NZ had body coloured engine bays .

From what Ben has told me and how I understand it early (at least) Pagewood and Acacia Ridge HK GTS had a gloss Warrigal engine bay, which some time later reverted to the grey satin or low gloss concoction used on lower luxury levels. This is reflected in both mine and my mates early Pagewood HK GTSs when we found them (1837-00002-H5 and 737-00020-H5). Also in two other later Pagewood HK GTSs I have that have the grey painted engine bay. At some stage later the decision was made to paint GTS engine bay gloss again. Not sure when this occurred, and if it is consistent across assembly plants. Im not sure about when/if gloss engine bay stopped on HK GTS at Elizabeth and Dandenong assembly plants. Ben may eventually see this post and reply.
The grey satin finish is just a mixture of Warrigal with left over paint from the last paint line shift, all mixed together hence the inconsistent colour. When you strip back something painted like this you sometimes get runs that are deep metallic blue or red or green in the paint, obviously poorly mixed globs of colour.

As for HQ firewalls Frank, from memory Pagewood HQs had a body colour firewall and others were black. I remember this changed sometime in the W sized vehicles but cant remember when. Again Ben or Warren or Terry or maybe DA will know more.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the reponses.
Mines a 1969 HT Premier, built 14A in Elizabeth SA.

The firewall is a greyish colour, but the inner guards etc, is glossy black. I dont think the engine bay was repainted overtime as was only a one owner car and completely original, but im not completely sure.

Thanks again

Bill

Bill, given what we think your car was it most likely would have had a pretty engine bay. My HK GTS327 was the dealer release car for GTS327 in Sydney and it had a really high finish engine bay.

The greyish colour is called SUB- FRAME GREY , some HOLDEN DEALERS have there own paint sections with there spares dept . they should be able to mix it for you.
