Gents,
Another stupid question coming up ...
Am I right to think that intertia reel equipped HQ-WB utes had a different lower mounting position (i.e. where the reel would go) to my 71 HQ?
Trying to decide on new belt options.

Hi well, big question, most utes came out with a bench seat and hq had lap sash seat belts, but im pretty sure you can fit any seat belts(hq wb) with a little mucking around,I plan to run inertia myself. If its not a "collectable",statesman caprice belts I think are really good but try n get the colour you want.new ones are around $170 each ,but do some homework on fittment if you choose this option, as they are great looking ,but you,ve gotta make sure they fit...most will...cheers Jim in Adelaide...Hindsight is bad vision! Haven't been doing much with ute, but back into now I've got all the bits and pieces for a 'new' interior - so thinking about belts again. It doesnt have interia belts, as mentioned the lower mounting point is different than the later utes that do. Has anyone installed the later mount, much involved? I guess I can just get new non-interia belts. ___________________________ WTB: - HQ-WB(?) bench seat 4-speed shifter - HQ-WB ute rear window - HQ-WB standard rims - HQ-HX coupe front windscreen mouldings - HQ-HX coupe door mouldings (the stainless one running along top of door exterior) |

Commercials didn't get inertia reel until 1/75, and the holes for the commercial style reels aren't there in a HQ unfortunately (they mount up near your shoulder), so you'll have to do what Greg suggests.

Also you will find that if you mount the inertia reel down the bottom near the floor, you will not have enough belt in the reel to comfortably go around a largish person. I mounted mine to the pillar near your shoulder and used a backing plate behind the pillar to strengthen the area. It is a fiddly job to get your hands in there through the vent holes but it can be done.

I'm not sure if HQ have it, but HJ-WB have an integral strengthening beam that runs inside the quarter panel and runs up to the area where the threaded hole is for the inertia reel mount. If you can see one cut up at a wreckers you will see what I'm talking about. I doubt HQ has it as I believe it is there specifically for the seatbelt reel.

Thanks Trev, that's what I was getting at.
I'll try and compare a HJ-WB, does sound like a bit of a job - thanks again too Byron and Greg.
Some new standard lap sash belts probably the way to go.

sedans wagons and statesmans have the inertia belts mounted at the bottom of the pillar..if you take a ute/van/tonner inertia belt and mount it at the bottom of the pillar it wont go around a skinny top model let alone a big fella..they were mounted half way up the pillar so they have less webbing in them..if you take a sedan wagon statesman belt and mount it half way up the pillar it will not retract all the way because it runs out of room to house the webbing...so take a sedan etc belt and mount it down the bottom and all the planets will align with the moon for you... going to church makes you no more a christian than standing in a garage makes you a car... www.classicozwreck.com.au |
