Gday all,
I'm thinking of buying a 1976 HJ Holden Statesman Caprice 308 auto in pretty good nick, unregistered for $ 1800 and do up as a project.
Being new to the restoration game (need a hobby when I'm on break from work) I was wondering if this is a good buy and if so, what problems should I be looking for ..hopefully not too many..

i would look for rust,everything else can be fixed / replaced.(at a price)

If rust is minimal and the vynil roof is sound with almost no bubbles and its a complete runner then yes the price is good, a lot of parts from sedans will fit including front doors but not rear ones.
Go for it before they go up in value.

Very limited in production too. I noticed today Rare Spares have repro door trims and badges listed. I picked up anoriginal sales brochure for HJ Caprice the other day too.

If its the Burgundy one in Nanango I wouldnt describe it as being in pretty good nick. Its not exactly in all original condition and looks to have had a rough life. Id be checking on how much rust is in it and where.

regardless of overall condition, still cheap, $1800 doesnt get you squat these days in just about anything steel bumpered, so at that price, and being a caprice, id jump on it and slowly do the deal on it

Hello Gents,
Thanks for the advice, Yes it is the one in Nanango, QLD. I will be taking a little road trip today to check it out, especially if it has any rust. Will be back on here tonite with some vin, engine and trim numbers just to check that everything is legit.

If you intend fixing it up, id be looking elsewhere, like one of these below. I know they are all around the $5-$6k mark but are worth that much more as they need heaps less work, and you can enjoy them now.

Have decided to keep looking for something else..I may go a holden v8 ute or tonner ...start at the easier end of the range (LOL) and work my way up.
Thanks for the advice tho..will be visiting this site on a regular basis to get more info...great site by the way, very informative.

if you can afford it, and have the room, id still be snapping it up anyways, let it sit there if you have to, snd if you want to fix you can, or you can part it out as it has a host of little trinklets that are are invaluable to other projects and people. i agree totally with buying smarter especially when it comes to resto stuff, but if the price is right, snap it up and it can sit there, scrappers wil eventuslly come along and then we will say "i would have bought that off you.." -:(

1800 as a wrecker is still a good price..i would pay that if it was closer..

V8 utes and tonners - be careful. Always cracked chassis, full of bog etc, plus unless its something special (like a V8 4spd HQ ute or a Sandman) theyll never really appreciate in value vs what you spend. A Statesman, Premier etc even a nice V8 Kingswood will be a better investment. Some of the big barges dont pull serious money for really good cars. Here are 2 x Fords for example, and Statesmans are similar unless they are HQ 350 examples (or 4V ZD Fairlanes):
