Anyone have access to an original HJ with 308, and could possibly get the carby numbers for me? Im told HJ's didn't have a different carb for auto and manual and all ran 7045281 with no 2 digit code like ZF, ZE etc after it. I've found 2 carbys so far displaying this. Preferably a late 1974 HJ but any will help.

Mark
Those are part numbers, not the number on the carb. I noticed in my parts books that a different carbis listed for auto and manual, but it could just be a blank off plug.

Byron, for all 308 V8s pre-ADR27A the manual & auto carbies are different. The vacuum advance port is located either above or below the throttle butterfly, depending on whether its a manual or an auto. Terry
Thats what I thought, however a few people who should know have told me they are the same for HJ auto and manual, this doesnt gel with parts catalogue either. And all the 7025281 cars im finding dont have the 2 letter code like others seem to eg HQ have ZF for 308 auto and I think ZE for manual.
Adam, that would be unreal if you can.

Google quadrajet identification I did not know how Holden Q-jets were numbered ,the 8 must mean Holden ? Example -- 7043283 , 70 = before 76 , 43 = 1973 , 2 = q-jet , 8 = holden , 3 (odd number ) = Man . This is carb from my 1974 SLR5000 manual . Mark . |

Mark, ive got all that but HJ are a bit funny for some reason. 8 does mean GMH. 704 is actually 1970 to 1975, 3 is 1973, 2 is Qjet, 8 is GMH, 3 is manual. Problem is there doesnt seem to be an even numbered carb for HJ, only the odd number (7045281). Ill have to do a search inthe Prem for its build sheet and see what carby code it has on it.
Playwme, imagine holding the carb with the air cleaner mount in your left hand and the throttle plate in your right. With the primaries pointed toward your belly look at the side of the secondary on the main body, just adjacent to the secondary throttle shaft. Itll be a number like 7045281, possibly with ZF or something like that after it. Then a 4 digit code under that.

More Q-jets , these are bodies I have at work , 7029282 ZB 0061 , 7029281 2169 , 7043284 1214 , 7041282 ZF 1663 (this one is strange 1971 & 1973 ? ) and off LH SLR5000 auto build sheet carb ZK . Are the HQ 350 carbs stamped as Holden (8) or chevvy ? Mark. |

7029282 ZB is an auto HG carb from early 1971.
7029281 is I think a manual 1969 308 carb but it may also be a 350 HT carb (James will know).
70423284 is a late HQ auto carb, possibly an early HJ (trying to work that out now - might possibly be close to right for my HJ).
4041282 ZF should be a 1973 HQ 308 auto carb (ive got a few of these too).
The first of the 327 carbs were not stamped as Holden but im pretty sure they were by HT, so HQ should be too. James (Monaro Muscle Parts) will answer this for you.

Adam, is the carb still on the car? If so can you look and see where the vacuum advance is connected. It appears that once the canister was installed the auto 308 picked up its vacuum advance from a port on the rear of the carb with the manual getting it from a front port via a T-piece at the front, with the other side of the T going to the canister. However as mine has no canister (being 11/74) im not sure what to do. I have located a 7045281 carb with a 3124 date code that only has the front vacuum port like a HQ carby, and it is connected to a hole down adjacent to and below the throttle. Also found a 7045281 carb with a 3394 date code and it has the port at the back as per the parts catalogue diagrams for a canister carby. _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? |

HK1837 I may be way off here but my understanding of the Rochester date codes is that the 3124 date code means that it was manufactured/finished in this case on the 312th day of 1974. So this one means it was manufactured/finished on Friday the 8th of November 1974 by the Rochester company.
So if justgm,s carby is the original for his car 0944 is April 4 1974 So it was made around seven months before his car was built and you would need something from around that same manufacture date for your car. Cheers Paul.

OK so which one of you has the original carby on there car. 4th of April to a 22nd of July vehicle seems like a more reasonable time for production in the US to delivery and fitment to a car in Australia than April to November does to me though. Does anyone else have some better knowledge on this. Cheers Paul.
