Ive noticed with the sandman's being rescued and restored hardly any had air conditioning fitted, either factory or after market.More seem to have power steering however. When I had my ute,the first thing I had fitted was air con, after a radio of course.

I drove it all over nsw and couldn't imagine doing it without it.Whereas power steering at the time gave you no road feel and I didn't consider it worthwhile. Was it a fashion thing,or cost?Nearly everything you buy now has air fitted standard.

Cheer's.

Back in the 70s and 80s air cond. was a bloody expensive optional extra.

Not just Sandmans. Look at any HQ-WB. Unless aircon was standard it was pretty scarce.

My HZ van is similar and its a BO6 as well.(Kingswood with metallic paint)
Mine even has the 2 pipes on the fuel sender.
Unfortunatly they dont pull as much $$ as the Sandmans.

My old HQ GTS coupe had factory air and factory green tinted glass (which i believe is standard with aircon). Never had it hooked up properly and after talking to a lot of people came to the conclusion that it was a waste of time/money. Actually just sold a complete HQ aircon system inc a dashpad for $250 so i guess some people are still keen on it.

Yes, green glass was standard with A/C, except I think on LX hatchback.

Spot on !!

One of the reasons Sandmans were popular is that they were way cheaper than say a Monaro, so most only had essential options like a V8. Besides a/cond & power steer were only for pansies back then.

Another thing to consider is that power steer might seem to be more popular on HQ-HZ than a/cond, but how many have been fitted at a later date using parts from a wrecked Statesman. A power steering conversion is cheaper, simpler & more commonplace than an a/cond job & much easier to get correct.

Dr Terry.

and i reckon we gotta keep in mind this: we expect that the fact intergrated air we fitt into our babies from wreck etc will be as good as the A/C we have in our daily drivers today like our VES BAS etc, it just isnt as good, air has come a long way since then, so just keep in mind that its not as efficent as a modern day car

Your right "We Wreck,"the air con was 31 years ago that I was talking about,no comparison to todays. The power steering back then was absolutely woeful.

Cheers.
