And I must admit that if a ute is not a "Tonner" style I refer to it as a "styleside". Is there a different term that may/should be used?

I think that this is exactly what GeeR is talking about.

A Ute is a only ever a Ute & not a One-Tonner. The terms styleside, stepside & wellbody etc. are meaningless Yank words that have crept into our language in recent years.

A One-Tonner could be also called a table-top or even a tray-back, but a Ute is a utility.

Wellbody and styleside are interchangeable Nicho - and no offence to you!

Always thought of them as americanisms, but could also be something to do with where you grew up in Australia..

Maybe Im just pretty simple I guess, but Ive always got by saying something is a ute or a tonner.

Hey GeeR

No offence taken. Can undersatnd your apprenhension of Americanisms......just look at the keypad of your phone. I just saw this as another piece of information to add my brain box. Learning is better than unlearning.
I and my mates have used the term "styleside" to help describe a/my ute/s to those who have very little idea of vehicles (there are people in the world like this)I live in Sth East QLD. I suppose it may also stem from a good majority of people know what a tonner is but needed a name to distinguish between a ute and a tonner ute.

You only have to listen to young people who pretend to be car guys to see how far Americanisms have infiltrated our society.

A whole heap of them now say "under the hood" instead of "under the bonnet" and whats with all these guys calling rear 1/4 panels rear fenders nowdays?

Next theyll be tapping along to the subs in the trunk while they fill up with gas.... (and I dont mean the LPG variety).

Cheers,

Mick

Oh how I hate utes being referred to as style sides. They are either utes or one tonners. If you have a yank ute like an El camino or a ranchero then by all means call them by their yank name.
License plate are another one creeping in. Your license goes in your wallet, the number plate goes on the car.

only us can eaters call them utes and tonners, over in the states, elcamino and ranchero is a pick up, tonners are "flatbeds". effees and C/K1500/2500/3500 silverados are trucks in all single and extended cabs, but a twin cab dual wheeled C3500 is called a "duallie duallie.." and a kenworth or mack or peterbuilt is called a big rig

Whats wrong with hood, trunk, fenders, 1/4 panels???

They are just words.

Many Americian words have found there way into Australian English Language. How does the world view all the Ocker words that have come from Australia over the years. (Gidday mate = Good day friend) as an example.

Anyway, Im excused - I own American Muscle, and it has a Hood, Trunk, Fenders and everything else Yankie Doodle Dandy....

TK Barinas are Daewoos, they were originally badged Daewoo Kalos. SB & XC Barinas were Opels, while MB, ML, MF & MH Barinas were Suzukis.

The Cruze however would not be considered a Daewoo, because the basic design began 3 years after Daewoo ceased to exist as an independent car company. Cruze (like Epica & Captiva) might be built in Korean factories that were once owned by Daewoo, but they are GM cars with GM engines & a high level of design input from both Australia & the USA. Blind Freddy can see that a Cruze is light years ahead of any old 90s model Daewoo.

Dr Terry, the cruze(a big part of it) is being developed in HTC japan and dies are being sent to HTA australia for the opening and closing panels for holden as we speak.adding to what you say about it being a GM car and not a daewoo,I actually work at the australian place HTA.
It really is interesting how many people/places are inlvolved in making cars...

I dont think the term Styleside is a yank only term, I think it is a automotive production term, to show of the difference between the ute using car styling, a tub ute like a rodeo or the tray of a tonner.

if you read a book called "My love had a black speed stripe", by Henry Williams writen in 1972, he (the author) referes to his time working on the Acacia ridge production line in the late 60s, he referes to the utes as stylesides on more than one occassion, long before the HQ tonner was avaliable, but before reading this book I had never herd of the term & had to search for it...

but to keep on topic I hate mondays that arnt public holidays....
