Hi all (particularly Byron...)

I know I asked this one before, but could you please tell me about my block??

Engine number is 308H13XXX and it has a casting saying K159 with a dial with 12 dots with the slot in the screw head (??) pointing to the 11 (or 5 - no arrow) if the 12 points direct to the rear of the car.

Can you tell me how old the engine is and how close it would have been to the start of 308 production??

Cheers and thanks in advance...

Jeremy

The first in the 253/308 HT-HG sequence was 308H1001 in a HT Brougham. Yours is a 15/10/69 block. 253 and 308 started in June 1969, engines probably a few months earlier. So yours is about 12,000 engines into the sequence. Most likely HT Brougham but by October/November 1969 308 was available across the HT range.

K159 as a date code is:

K = 10th month... There is no (I) when counting the months as it can be confused with the number 1 so they dont use it...

15 = the production day in the month....

9 = the year as in 1969 or 1979

cheers
Al

Jeremy, not sure how I came to the date this morning as I was typing in a rush to get out the door. I fixed it up in my post above so it should make more sense now...

Thanks Guys

Much appreciated - Ill know how it works now.

Is there a way to determine the day the G rolled off the line??

8/70s the date on the build plate, but itd be nice to know the exact date so I can throw him a good 40th bash....

Last registered 6/12/2002, so assuming it was continuously registered, a delivery date of 6/12/1970 might be about right???

Cheers

So with my new found understanding of casting dates this one must be really close to the first of the 308s.....

Yes, an early HT Brougham engine. Ive asked him the engine number to see how close it is to 308H1001 which is the first in the 253/308 sequence.

Today I was at a mates. We went out to the shed and he showed me a Holden 253 he had on an engine stand that he is about to rebuild.

Upon closer inspection I noticed it was a very early HT 253.

Engine number: 253H1271. 271st Holden V8
Dated: K188. 18th October 1968.

It had no 'HP' or '253' in raised letters on the side of the block.

Awesome (270th if my maths are right!). Can you get a photo of the blank side, cast date and the engine number next time you are there?

Sure, no problem. Although I am uncertain as to how to upload the photo on this forum. Tried once before but unsuccessful.

Interesting that it was made in October 68, yet wouldnt of found its way in to a car until May 69?

Not really, GMH never threw anything away so if it was around it would have gotten used. It may have even originally been used in a HK for Engineering or testing purposes and made it's way into a "GMH TEST VEHICLE". Or they may have simply made a large number of engines ready for HT release, may not have even been assembled until many months later. My guess though is it was an early casting with a problem, and later got fixed and thrown back onto the engine production process. It is quite possible xxxH1270 and 1272 were cast in early 1969.

I've sent you a PM so you have my email address.

Greetings, That is perfectly normal for an early cast 253 block. There was no external marking to show the capacity. The early cast 308 engines had the letters HP so that the two engines were not mixed up when the engine number was stamped on them.
look out, the guru is coming through...

I looked a 308 i have in the workshop today. The numbers are:

308H11XXX, K39 ( October 3 1969).

It has '308' in raised numbers on the side of the block. Hoping this info will help in the puzzle of when 'HP' went to '308'.

From memory that must be real close to the changeover. I do remember discussing this with a certain Monaro guru, and from what I remember the changeover wasn't instant. Probably because 308's were low volume until they became available outside Brougham. Maybe new moulds were introduced and HP continued alongside 308 for a time period?

the only HP i have now is 308H3###.

its a may '69 block & like all 1969 blocks it has "HOLDEN" cast near date code (behind oil filler tube)

i have several 253H & 308H motors & latest one with "HOLDEN" cast near date code is 308H81## dec 17th '69.

the earliest 1970 one i have is 253H16### & its C60 (march)

has anyone had a '70' motor with "HOLDEN" cast on it????

or a '69' motor without???

ive seen plenty of HP 308s in my time but never a 253 with nothing on block (unless it was 308 ground off for "P" plater)

keep an eye on my website.

from mid march i will be adding hundreds of items ive been hoarding/collecting for 20yrs, including early single outlet w/pumps (to suit a/con or white hot, or torana)twin 10 & 2oclock ones for HT, HG, HQ. timing covers, oil filler necks with genuine oil caps (with propper grooves near "OIL" & splash shield on bot!!!NOT REPRO )
