1) when did the black HJ "sports instumentation" (GTS DASH) fascia first appear?.
i used "sports instrumentation" so Dr Terry doesnt chip me on it and avoid confusion, as it appears all HJ GTS were silver.

2) when did the odometer go from 5 digits to 6? - have narrowed it down to between 9/1975 to 4/76.

Adam

I think Absinth went into this on another post. I think they are all silver except later LS and Premier which became woodgrain.

I was looking at HJ stuff for the book last night and talking to Ben Stewart about it as well. It does appear there was a major HJ series "rationalisation" for want of a better word around 3/76 at the time of LX Torana release. It is possible this happened at that time.

I do not think you will find a definitive answer on this, if you take the HQ speedo discussion recently D.A. Barnes has seen cars that contradict the service bulletin. You will probably find each plant changed at different times.

Byrons assumption maybe right, but I would guess that it was gearing up to the HX (Statesman and GTS dash almost identical to HX) so they may have these instruments before the standard speedo. I have a copy of the manufacturers bulletin but it is not dated.

yes i used the search feature on here first, its a question that appears to come up every month.
but i still had these two questions.
Dr Terry had an answer about early HJ being all silver, then at some stage in HJ changing to silver in GTS and LS only and black for other models.

I think you have me wrong adam, I wouldnt chip you for using the term GTS dash or whatever, because basically thats what it is, although it is instrumentation & not a dash but we wont go there. What gives me the irrates is when people (especially on ebay) call things Monaro this & Monaro that, when they are clearly GTS items & not from an LS or a base Monaro. IMHO if there was a black Sports Instrument facia it would have appeared quite late in the HJ model run, Byrons 3/76 date might be around the money.

The 6-digit odometer is an interesting one, I seem to remember them appearing fairly early in the piece. It was obvious even in the HQ run that 5-digits were a joke. I worked at a taxi base in those days & we had HQs going around the clock & back to zero, even before the HJ was released. I would have thought (& this is only opinion) that there were more 6-digit odos than 5-digit in the HJ series.

Dr Terry

I dont know if this helps but my dash is a black one (wrong for car i know) and the ODO is a five digit one.

This may suggest (if the timings are right above) that the 5 digit odo was around after 3/76.

my 4/76 GTS wasnt exactly unmolested when i pulled it apart, but all the date codes found around the car seemed to be correct, including the one under the crash pad.
the sports instrument facia in my car was silver.
the odometer is a xxx, xxx.x (6 digit) unit.

Hi Pete

I expect that you right (given that it is black - and not just faded)

I would fix it, but i like the black rather than the silver fascia.

I found the flexidrive bulletin and they first talk about the 7 digit odometer dated 1/75. I do not think that would be the intro date, but the HQ bulletin is date 6/71, so would be close to the time.

Note they are 6 and 7 digit odomenter, the decimal is a digit.

I hope this helps a bit more with the search.
