I have an HX 253 4 speed with a clutch so heavy Im going to end up with one leg bigger than the other.

I've heard someone calling the clutch mechanism a "rat trap" system which can be altered by changing the bellhousing and using a full clutch cable.

I guess it's been discussed many times but does anyone have acurate info on this conversion and what parts are needed for it?

The HX has a cable clutch system, not "rat trap". They changed the operating direction in WB, so night be worth looking at WB pedal, bellhousing and mechanism.

What exactly is the "rat trap"? Is it a mechanical system that is operated by the cable?

Are you saying the HX has a cable system running from the pedal to the clutch fork?

Such a heavy pedal couldnt be standard or they would never have sold these things so Im wondering if the pressure plate may be the problem

warrens post is confusing?

your clutch shouldnt be toooo heavy just slightly heavier than a 6 cyl

there is 2 types of rat traps, the HQ-HJ full rat trap and the HX cable and rat trap the the HZ and WB have full cable

your HX should have a cable that operates a "small" rat trap, if you change your mechanism you will have to change you pedal and bell housing, a BIG job!

its most likely just worn or slightly ceased up, try spraying some WB40 on the moving parts and check for excessive wear

Cool, Ill give that a go first. Its probably the heaviest clutch Ive ever operated.

If a good cleanup doesnt fix it, what is the bellhousing I need?

How come it would need another pedal? I think I may a good walk around a wreckers or something to see the difference in the flesh.

Thanks for the responses

youll only need to change the pedal if you change the mechanism type, the top section of the pedal suits the mechanism type

for example the cable type has a hook to grab the cable, the full rat trap has a ball in it and a metal loop slips over it

ill dig up a few picys for you

That is just plain brilliant. I really appreciate you taking the time to clear this up for me.

Now it makes sense. I better keep a lookout for some workshop and parts manuals too.

Thankyou

imo, these are the best manuals to get, the genuine holden ones, they can be brough new still and theres always heaps of them on ebay and swap meets

if you do get them, the red ones are vol 1-6 and there HQ only (although most parts continue thru the range) for other models there are the HJ suppliment, HX suppliment.... ect ect these cover the differances when the models change, the differances only, youll still need the red ones

i have a full set, there the best manuals ive got, very detailed pics

I would try a new cable first? Once they get a bit seized she will get pretty heavy. Made a big difference on my WB even though they are different. I didnt realise they had so many versions for a clutch set up.

excellent pics of all the pedals but the problem with the heavy clutch generally has to do with people running the wrong pedals or cables with the hx to wb systems...3 different pedals.. and 4 different cables and they will all interchange without an intimate knowledge of there workings...AND THEN...there is the problem of putting the hx and later pedals into the hq hj pedal boxes...in the last 20 years of wrecking i have seen some serious rocket scientist mods done to these...
