Got a problem with the EJ.

When you put it in drive and take off from a standing start the transmission skips second gear, but once in top wil kick down to second.

If you put it in second it will go first then second, placing in top then allows to up shift into top gear and it kick downs no problem.

Up and down shifts are nice and smooth, any ideas?

Hydramatics are not easily compared to any other transmissions. If you have the thing running through the gears nice & smooth when they do, then you might have a trans that is worth salvaging. I am aware of a couple of guys in Melbourne that can tackle these autos, generally older guys that worked on them in the 60s. Dont know any in Qld. though. Shoot an email off & I will try to track down some info for you.

You can get a full kit out of the states for 3K. Also there are three types of Hydramatics, some EJs got the EK boxes.

You need to pull it out and check before getting a kit. I used three boxes to make one for the wifes Prem

I do not think it is stuffed, as it drives well in second, if you get it in there.

Have spoken to a couple of guys and am taking action. (suggested valve body or throtle linkage adjustment. Will try the latter first.) Shall get the car registered this month and then drive to experts for final adjustment or fix.

It is a real early EJ so probably an EK box if that is the case.

With the EK vs EJ Hydra thing, its the other way around.

The first EKs had the H561 box & from April 1962 this changed to the H562.

AFAIK the later H562 EK box ran all the way thru the EJ series.

hi warren,
remember the hydromatic is a 4 sp box, and second is normally confused with first.

i have had trimatics do this when they had sat for many years not running . i.,e 10 years.
after some trans conditioner, the trans is generally ok.
i guess the valve body completely dries out.
