Doc, perhaps the term "knock off" is just another example of cultural imperialism from our American cousins.

I have given up trying to preserve our cultural heritage, my kids and grandkids just reply with a droll glance and a shake of their head.

"You dont know what youve got til its gone".

OK, Ill shut up about it now.

Gday Jim, I did say "perhaps".

Well, maybe it could be one of those sayings that are different from state to state in Oz then, you know like a potato scallop in NSW is a potato cake in VIC & SA or strasbourg in SA is berliner in NSW, dunno mate, maybe we could start a thread on that topic, lol.

Yes, but it is difficult when people use a new term that is already in use, with a totally different meaning.

A Knock Off to me describes the knock off hub retainers that MGs & old Jaguars use to retain their wire wheels. You know, the type that look like winged centre hubs. They just knock off with one or two hits with a hammer, there are no wheel nuts.

Whats wrong with the words copies or non-genuine ?

Dr Terry

The term "cheap knock offs" or "knock off" has been around for years used to describe "pirate" or counterfeight stuff, like shoes, handbags, board shorts etc. Basically cheap "made in Asia" somewhere stuff with brand names applied like Nike, Chanel, Billabong, D&G, Rolex etc. See below.

After this Im sayin nuttin more on this subject.

Byron, wikipedia is an American website and none of the references (at the bottom of the page) for that article are Australian.

Sorry folks, but the term "KNOCK OFF" as far as copying something goes is an Americanism.

Australian for knock off is either pinching something, going home from work, getting intimate, beating an opponent or taking the wheels off ya Jag or MG etc.

ps; dont shoot the messenger.

it must be a SA thing? ive never heard of it either (in that context)

in VIC, "knock off" means;

1/ youve finished work (knocked off)

2/ your stolen something (knocked something off)

3/ centre hup, wheel retainer (as the doc describes)
