Can anyone tell me how to confirm an RPO 83 apart from looking for a 780 Holley and a set of factory headers? I guess a letter to ford with the VIN might be the best way. Any feedback appreciated

Look at the dash, they have a manual choke. And maybe RPO 83 on the VIN.

Ring Ford with the compliance plate info. The RPOs were built during a certain time frame that I cant pretend to remember. If youre going to fork out money for this car do the legwork, ring Ford and also get in touch with the Australian GT club and see if they know anything about the history of this car. Make very sure it hasnt had a rebody and that the engine hasnt been restamped. Car is most probably all good but a bit of healthy paranoia always helps to keep things in perspective.

And how many RPO 83s are getting around with thier original 780 Holley and Factory Headers?
They are just engine peripherals that can easily be lost to time but it doesnt make the car any less an RPO, its just one that is missing some bits.
Personally, I cant see the big deal about them when you can buy any of the parts that made them what they are off the shelf (or Ebay) today.
How many XAs have you come across over the years that are purported to have RPO parts on them and therefore are potentially mysterious super muscle cars and worth 10K more than something else?
Baah! Humbug!! Just get yourself a nice V8 that performs well and turn it into what youd like, if that happens to be akin to an RPO then so be it, because at the end of the day it wont be any different a car.

well said craig, RPO is just one massive myth fuelled by over zellous enthusiasts with too much money and spend too much time reading ford internal bullitins from 1972. the ford verification letter also isnt worth the paper its printed on, all that will tell you is that ford australia actually built that car, not some back yard dude wanna be shelby type racer running a low volume production workshop. even some ZJ-ZK fairlanes stil have RPO83 part numbers on certain parts that were fitted to them, so you make up your own mind on it.

Yeah its hard to pick an RPO from a standard GT. They are worth more to buyers than a standard GT though. It is what it is so if you are going to pay a bit more for an RPO best to check and make sure its the genuine article. Its not so much what went on the cars its the story behind them and the myths that surround them. Bit like a GT or a phase 3. You can get any standard 351 to handle better and go harder. Its the JG 33 and the JG66 on the plates that makes them worth so much.

old thread but for anyone else wondering..If Your lucky you can find the build sheet under the carpet.(usually the passenger side)Ford confirming is hard to get now I think.Inside the engine they also have rare caps on hydraulic lifters to make the cam act as a solid.(7500rpm)but they die up there.Piston failure.

Thanks Jim and Paul
The carpet is long gone. Anyway I thought most build sheets we placed on top of the glove box under the dash on the XA B aND Cs.
This one has the Holley the headers and the manual choke but as far as I can see, its all been done later. And since this email was sent Ford have confirmed its not an RPO 83 . Its also a Single big Comp plate model. All of the RPOs I have seen are twin Comp tag

some build sheets were also stuffed into the void in the boot where the shocky covers are. Hard to see and no guarantee.
