Hi,i would like to ask peoples opinion on the HT Monaro GTS that was exported to South Africa. What should i pay for one in excellent condition{ball park figure}? Are they worth more, less or the same as an Aussie assembled one?
This is not a SS Chevelle, its a HT GTS. Cheers.

If its a HT GTS it is an Aussie car.
If its an SS its a South African car.
All Holdens CKD and fully assembled for South Africa all came under the Chevrolet Name-plate.

Are you sure? I though Holdens were sold side by side with Chevrolet badged examples for HT.

This is not correct !! All series from FB to HR were sold in Sth Africa only badged as Holdens. HK & HT were sold as either Holden or Chev & all HG to HJ were badged Chev. Some of the HR to HT Holdens had Chev 6 Cyl engines factory fitted. To my knowledge the Holdens were sold thru a different & separate dealer network to the Chev models. At the time SA was a bit like the US with separate networks for different brands. Sorry, I will re-itterate my statement, all Holdens that were Chevrolet powered were under the Chevrolet name-plate from HK on. I did not think the OP was saying Holden Powered because he mentioned SS Chevelle. I should read things with a little more care.

Again are you sure of that? I thought you could get a 350 powered HT GTS in South Africa, and also 6cyl Chev powered HK and HT as a Holden (as Dr Terry also states).

IMO, I dont see a problem with the SA version HT, dont like the later twin headlight Chev buts thats just my opinion. SA Rand is about 7 times less than our Dollar, Ive seen them for around 85,000 Rand (approx $12000)complete and in good cond. Then feight e.t.c, e.t.c, e.tc, costs on top of that. Good option if you cant afford an Aus version. Do your home work on the freight and all the additional costs to get it here though. Hope this helps.

You raise an interesting point here Terry. From all accounts GMSA were very much a close interest to GM America as they were to GMH Australia. This was a huge thing at this point in time for GMH as the newly developed Aussie V8 was been used for the first time in cars from 1969. I am sure all HK model SS Monaros were all Chevrolet powered, and because of the huge sales from this in 1968 - GMSA kept the SS in the HT, and HG, marketed as Chevrolets, and all GTS Monaros as Holdens. Im yet to see a photograph of an SS with a Holden V8 fitted from factory.

This may help. They are the text part of the original 1971-1972 Chev SS sales brochures. Clearly show the 308 and 350 options. http://www.moby302.co.za...vrolet/chev_ss_specs.GIFhttp://www.moby302.co.za...chev/1971_chev_ss_07.JPGhttp://www.moby302.co.za...chev/1972_chev_ss_06.GIF_______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? |

The first Monaro/SS in South Africa was the HT, they did not get the HK.
The HT was a Monaro with 308 and then also 350, they all had the salisbury rear axle, like Australian 308 and 350 GTS.
In HG they became a Chevrolet SS with 308 or 350.
Once again they had the salisbury diff.
They all have the saginaw hump, makng them 308/350 manual bodies. The 350 auto also got the 25 gallon tank, unlike here where the 350 auto got the 16 gallon tank.
As Terry said they were CKD to South Africa and assembled there.
I do not see why they are not the same price as an Australian car when they are here, but the same goes for the Ford Faclon GT equivalent.

Thats correct for the coupe body but they did get the sedan, wagon & Brougham bodies badged as Chevs, in the HK series. Dr Terry _______________________________________ The best argument against democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter. |

My SS350 with factory auto has the smaller tank, as have all the other confirmed SS350 autos I have seen (which is very few, btw). Pretty sure its factory. The HT 350 and SS350 manuals have the big tanks though...
What Warren says about the models is correct, there were no HK Monaros sent over... They all have the Saginaw hump, and tramp rod set ups (although not all have tramp rods, ie my SS350 auto has the holes, not the rods. Again, I think this is factory).
HT Monaros were available with 308 and 350 (auto and manual), a small number of HG Monaros were sold (again 308/350 and auto manual), possibly as a transition model with some minor SS elements, and then the Chev SS, which came with 350 or 308, auto or manual...
If you can find a good one that hasnt been molested and had weird stuff done to it then its worth buying. Usually not very rusty (although depends where they are from in RSA) and half the price of aussie equivalent landed in Oz.
Bit of hoop jumping to get them registered etc...
Cheers
Paul D.
