I was just wondering when did Holden start putting RTS on the HX range? Did it include the same upgrades as what the HZ got? if not what did it get? and last roughly how many HXs had radial tuned suspension?
Cheers, Mark

HX never got RTS. Just the front suspension geometry change (front "shock tower"). Dr Terry told me a while back what date it applied from but I cant remember for sure - I think it was July 1977.

No, RTS is much more including steel radial tyres, rear sway bar mounted on the body, springs, shocks etc. The geometry is just a part of it.

You can put a sway bar on anything, but it was part of RTS standard I assume? I just wondered why it was deleted from the wb ute?

They.(sway bars)were being put on cars way before 1977 and by the factory is my point.I could be wrong, but Im sure they were "fitted by factorys" so were radial tyres I reckon, but maybe not all as a package with the front geometery of the hzs.

My HX is august 77 built too and it has the different front shock tower, rear sway bar, 6" rims and badge on the dash that says RTS radial tuned suspension. would soemone have really gone to all this trouble making it RTS spec?

It is quite possible that RTS was installed on HX very late, although ive never seen one. HZ/WB rear sway bar was decoupled and the diff had the 2 x mounting tabs on the back for the bar. There was heaps more to RTS as well like suspension bushes etc. _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? |

Byron is correct, there is more to RTS than the front end change, but that is the most important part, because everything else can be bolted on.
Late HX cars did get the new front end geometry (July 77 onwards from memory), but not anything else. I doubt very much that GM-H would have fitted a complete RTS set-up to any production HX prior to HZ release, especially the dash badge.
Depending on the model, RTS meant more to some cars than others. All HZ got the thicker GTS front sway bar as standard & a de-coupled rear bar. This rear bar had brackets welded to the rear axle tube & & the body. To my knowledge no pre-RTS had these, all accessory rear bars were not de-coupled, they were bolted to the lower trailing arms. The shocks & springs were up-rated considerably & the shock mountings improved. Lower inner front suspension bushes & rear suspension bushes were made stiffer & all cars got 6" rims & radial tyres as standard. Most models got steel belted radials. Power steering boxes had their valving altered, for more precise feel. There were many other minor upgrades to steering column etc. also.
Dr Terry

Just had a look under my HX and the rear sway bar is mounted he same as my dads HZ, with the tabs welded to the axle housing. also could you option 6" stock rims on the HX range? when i get new tyres ill have a look at the dates stamped on the rims to see if they match up with the car..
Thanks for the replys guys its really interesting stuff, but one last thing is there anywhere that has a full list of what RTS included?
Cheers, Mark

De-coupled rear sway bar; Coil springs; Shocks; Shock mountings; Relocated top front control arm mounts; Suspension bushes; Rear lower control arm bushings; Body mountings; Stiffer steering connecting rod insulators; More rigid steering column attachment.
This is HZ 4 door. LX was a bit different.

Hi Interesting topic, Hurts to admit that I have forgotten the details of this, In late HX this was of much interest for all under 30,s in the workshop when new cars started turning up for pd,s with the sway bar brackets on the diff,s. Remember rear stabilizers were still in petrol head territory those days. I think the steering arms are different also. closer out to the center of the tire to help with that ackerman principle (toe out on turns)talked about on here a few months ago. We used to fit these arms and links to Hq,s but for some reason you could not use 7 inch rims only 6 inch maximum for tie rod end clearance(fronts). So question is on RTS cars are the stub axles different also. cheers,

I broke the lower left control arm on my WB ute. I got a replacement and when I put it on the hole the shock goes through was smaller. It now steers poorly and am wondering if the control arms are different on earlier models?

I agree about RTS being a lot more than a couple of anti sway bars. I had an LX which was August 76 vintage from memory. It was pre RTS but had been fitted with a pair of after market bars. Despite that its handling was woeful compared to an RTS LX.
