Well i have another problem for all the gurus out there, the trimatic behind the 253 in my HX is changing gears really harsh, hard to explain but it sort of slams it into the gears going up and when it changes down gears it does the same thing and makes a "clunk" that sounds like its coming from the diff?.. should i start looking for another transmission? or is there a simple solution?

Cheers, Mark

GO Under the car and check the tailshaft for play, pay close attention to the diff, you will find out that way,(as itch said)if nothing is wrong there(but i bet it is),,its tranny trouble.

Mark. Perhaps the vacuum modulator pipe has come unconnected when you have been working on your brake problem. (Small pipe about 4 mm in diameter)that goes into the same fitting on your manifold that the brake booster hose fits into.If this is the case upshift wont occur until max speed in each gear has been reached. then as soon as you start to slow down the downshifts will occur also at the maximum speed for that gear. Hope its as simple as that. cheers oily.

Thanks for the replys guys. I replace diff cover gasket yesterday and had a good look at the diff and under the car while i was doing it, there is a bit of backlash, but not heaps, im going to replace the uni joints anyway so that might make it a bit better. the modulator vac line was the first thing i checked, always have problems with it on my dads ute so its not that... could the modulator be stuffed? anyway of testing/checking it?

Thanks, Mark

in my experience when the TriMatic modulator dies the car has a tendency to kick down to 2nd when cruising at about 100. Ford modulators can cause rough shifts so maybe a Holdem one can too I suppose.

Vandals and graffiti "artists" do everyone a favour and target parking meters and fixed speed cameras only.

Well ill need to replace the pump/convertor seals in it soon so a new modulator cant hurt. Its not slipping so i dont see the need for a band adjustment, and its not worth the $100+ to get it done if its going to blow up LOL
