Hi, I am thinking of importing an engine from the USA and was wondering if anyone has done this, roughly what are the shipping costs , are there any import duties and taxes to be paid once it gets here and roughly how long does shipping take? I am in Western Australia.
So far have been unimpressed with their customer service.

If i remember, sea freight is suprisingly good value but takes weeks, or even a month. Air is fast, but in the region of maybe 2grand.

If youre importing something less than $1000, you avoid heavy taxes, hence why blocks and parts are popular imports. Complete motors get slugged a little.

Basically, you can do it and you do save a little, even a fair amount, but you have to wait, and it can be a hassle. Buying here is more expensive, but oh so easy.

Take your pic.

Hi bogart, Ive imported a 383 stroker engine to freo from North Dakota, shipping was US 600 i think, and paid around $1200 au for taxes and all the little fees once it got here.
It was much more economical to get an engine built over there than it was to get one with the same specs done locally. Shipping took 4 weeks and I could track where it was. The engine took a while to get built though. I got some accessories with it AED tweaked Holley Carb, leads, dizzy, and steel flywheel, even with taxes it was cheaper than getting those parts here.
You flag the warantee but thats the risk you take. If youre not in a hurry i reckon its worth it. Are you unimpressed with customer service locally?

Thanks all, for the info, I would rather buy aussie but was impressed with the brand new blocks etc available fromm the USA. However now that I can factor in the costs provided by helpful fastlaners I know exactly where I stand and am no longer guessing. The lasy engine I had built was 20 years ago. I was lucky enough to hear of a bloke from a mate. The guy who built the motor turned out to be a guy called Norm Trandos from Perth who had the fastest street car in Australia for a time, back in the old Ravenswood days. I didnt know it at the time but for a total of $1942 I had a fast reliable motor and all done in his home shed and blew away some of the big name performance shops.
In regard to being unimpressed with local guys, yes I have a few mates in the trade who tell me tragic tales about big name performance shops. I have heard of $130,000 motors that are stuffed from the start. Now thanks to everyones feedback I think I may consider spending my money locally.
Thanks again for the help and info. And has anyone got any recomendations for Perth based rebuilders?

Try Shafiroff in the states. They advertise in Street machine. Have read reports where people have bought from them and have been happy. They may even be able to give you Aussie referals.
Re duty, if engine is disclosed as being wholly manufactured in USA,should now be duty free due to free trade agreement. May just need to pay GST and freight.

Thanks bigindian66, great site and a really proffessional company. One powerball and I will order one sadly until then will have to look at something a little less expensive.
