Rare Spares are looking at producing painted HQ GTS Grilles. However, at this point there has been a fair bit of confusion internally and externally on how the stripes were originally painted. It appears that there may have been three different types, depending on what state the car was built in (see images below). Can anybody shed some light into which way these should be produced? Kind Regards Rare Spares

Im with Greg, I think the top one looks correct.
Is it just me or are those grilles pictured upside-down?

There are 4 x different styles, not 100% sure on differences but I think this is right:
1 - 2813762 - All except SS, Sandman, GTS, LS or Premier (later M38198). I think this is the bottom one. 2 - 2813763 - Premier, LS (all silver? not shown). 3 - 2813764 - GTS. This is the top one as Dr Terry and Greg have said. 4 - 9928882 - SS, Sandman. All black, not shown.

good to see you fixed the pics of the grilles being upside down.. i think you will find its the top one that is more common... as in seen more and recognised as gts... going to church makes you no more a christian than standing in a garage makes you a car... www.classicozwreck.com.auEdited by user Wednesday, 7 April 2010 2:45:06 AM(UTC)

Yeah thanks for pointing out the upside down pic. Before I uploaded them, I was looking at the picture for about 2 minuets trying to work out what was wrong with it...
Just to clarify with both Classic Oz Wreck and Dr Terrry, is the thought that;
the top one is the ONLY correct one or they are ALL correct but the top one is the most common
Still interested to hear other peoples thoughts too...

below are 2 pictures of the grille in my hq gts 350 coupe..it doesnt appear to have ever been painted and is not a perfect grille with cracks in slats but no peices missing...hence why i believe it to be original. sorry about the side shots but theres another car in front of it so i could not get a straight shot.. going to church makes you no more a christian than standing in a garage makes you a car... www.classicozwreck.com.au |

Greg.
Those pictures of your grille look more like image 2 than image 1, in Les post.

If you look at the period Holden sales pamphlets, the 71/72 GTS has a grill that looks like the image No 3. 73/74 GTS 2 & 4 Door phamplet shows a grill matching image No 1. But again there is nothing stopping one plant being different to another, but from all the Holden images I have looked of the time, it appears the 71/72 GTSs had a different grill to the 73/74 models, which would make sence as it would be a cost affective facelift.. Ive got that same brochure picture (as above) and in my picture the grille is defintely black like picture 1. Remember the grilles were all done by a 3rd party outside GMH and supplied ready to go, thus there will be no plant specific differences as all grilles came from the same supplir. PLUS, GTSs were only built at 2 x plants: Pagewood and Dandenong. Until XV$/XW8 release that is.

Sorry no help on the GTS side of things but HK1837 you mentioned the fact there was only one supplier of the original Holden grills. This has got me interested as I have wondered if that was the case. Which leads me to a question for anyone that can help answer it. I know of two types of HQ grill. One is made of black plastic and the other is made of what I would refer to as a gray plastic. I have posted links to pictures of both types here http://www.concoursepart...um/index.php?topic=269.0Does anyone know when they changed or was it just a substitute for a while in mid production ?. My interest is that the SSs came out with a black grill and I am wondering if they were painted black or were actually just black plastic with no paint on them at all. Another SS owner in the post linked above has said that this is what his is like (no paint) and I also have a pure black plastic grill with no paint on it myself. Would this be correct. Cheers Paul.

as we have discussed before, you cant really trust the cars in these brochures, they are like hookers on a street corner, they make you feel like grabbing one coz they look hot, they take your money, they get changed, chopped up, redone, touched up with paint and eventually thrown away after they have taken all your money..so yanno, make up your own mind on that one "Reputations are made and broken as soon as you enter or leave my shed.."
