So much for a "fat spark"lol, the new coil should have one

Yeah I wouldnt know a fat spark if zapped me. All I knew was that the coil lead was arcing in a thick yellow arc to earth across a 1.5mm-2.0mm gap that I could see clearly in daylight. The earthed spark plug arc was more a blue-ish yellow.

Anyhow, I reckon the coil was on its way out for a while. I just went to fire up the car now and it starts from cold first turn of the key and with only one pump of the accelerator, which it hasnt been close to doing for a while. Just happy I found out what was wrong, even though it took me forever...

Its nice to get them going again! Good when it is simple and cheap to fix as well.

Its an easy way to get caught out.

Ive had a few cases of a stuffed coil where they still give a nice fat spark when you test them with an earth gap outside the engine, but add in a bit of compression as found inside the engine, and the spark that was fine in the normal atmosphere, is now too weak to do the "bang" part of the suck-squeeze-bang-blow 4-stroke cycle....

Cheers,

Mick
