Just wanted to know if Im on the right track as I've got a HG k/wood with a 161 & 3 on the tree manual which I'm putting a 253 into. I 've heard that I can re-use the 6cyl box if I change the output shaft & bellhousing to V8 ones, is this correct? Also is the rat-trap, clutch fork etc the same between 6 & V8 models? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Hi mr dooby.

In short, yes you can use your existing gearbox.

The shaft that requires changing is the input shaft (not output).

The rat-trap is different for the V8, the amount of throw is more on the V8 fork because it operates thru the outer hole on the lever.

Input shaft, bellhousing, clutch fork and input shaft cover will be needed. Reece at Kingswood Country has new V8 3spd input shafts which will be neoprene seal so make sure you get a post 1973 input shaft cover for it off a 3 or 4spd. Before you do it make sure the box is the same ratios as a HQ box, as im pretty sure HT V8 3spd uses a different gearset to 6cyl. Not sure about HG. If not just get a HQ-WB V8 3spd box, or get a 6cyl one and convert it to V8.

A lot of the all synchro 3sd setup is common between 6cyl and V8 but soem bits are different. Have a look at a HT or HG parts catalogue and study it and all will become clear.

Byron.

If mr doobys original gearbox is a 6-cyl item, the ratios will be standard.

He will only strike problems if he tries to convert an HT V8 gearbox back to a 6.

Thanks all for the replies. Maybe I should just see if I can find a HT/G V8 manual setup instead which in turn may be a mission in itself;)Cheers.

A HQ-HZ V8 3spd will do the job - its the same thing. You just need the couple of HT/HG 253 clutch mechanism bits that are different.
