Chaps,

Will a disk brake diff from a 1991 EB station wagon fit into an XY with no dramas ?

I have been told it will...but I'd like to get a second opinion :)

The XY currently has the 6 cyl diff with drum brakes in it.

I would like a stronger diff with disks, if at all possible. Budget does not stretch to a 9" or anything silly.

thanks.

The EB wagon is a leaf rear end. Youd really need to measure it up. Also have to work out a master cylinder and handbrake setup. Wheel stud pattern I think is different too. Sorry I dont know any answers but thats stuff Id be checking.

OK the spring perches on an EB wagon are the same spacing apart as they are on an XY so the rear axle assembly will bolt in. However there are a couple of differences.

Firstly any XA-EL diff will widen your rear track by 50mm as they are 50mm wider than an XR-XY diff this is really no big deal.

The other issues you will face are that the EB brake lines will have metric threads so to plumb them in you will need some sort of adapter. connecting the handbrake cable will likely be your biggest issue.

I also forgot too. The wheel stud pattern is the same but the centre spigott is the larger (generally XC onwards) size so standard XY wheels wont fit on anymore.

You will also have to remove the drum brake residual line pressure valve from your master cylinder otherwise the disc brakes will drag.

OK....

Hmmm...so what would be the best way of getting XC type pattern on the front then, to suit the back ?

Id be looking at putting some sort of aftermarket sporty wheel on anyway./...maybe....

Its got 12 slots right now.

Well the stud pattern is the same the only difference is the size of the centre spigot and subsequently the hole in the middle of the wheel.

If you already have vented front discs and want the larger centre spigot then just replace the front hubs and rotors with XC-XG items.

If you have drums or solid front discs (very unlikely) then replace the stub axle/rotor/caliper assembly from an XC-XG.

Easier and cheaper still is to fit your front hubs with hub centering rings which are avaliable at most places that sell alloy wheels.
