How the hell do I put my springs back in to the tonner? I have just replaced all bushes and balljoints and started to put it all back together this arvo. Do I need spring compressors of some description? If so, what type do I need?

Cheers

Kev

Havent done it in a HZ, but have to several other cars. My method is
Get a length of half inch threaded rod (or similar)thats long enough to go through the Shock absorber hole in the lower control arm, and through the top shock absorber hole. It will need a bend of about 20 or so degrees at about the lower pivot point. Screw a nut onto the thread at the top to hold it in place. This rod will prevent the spring from flying out at you if there is some sort of mishap.
Put a trolley jack under the outer end of the lower control arm, with the spring in place. Jack up slightly and make sure the spring is located correctly top & bottom. Jack up til you can install the upper & lower ball joint nuts. Dont lower the jack til you have both lower & upper ball joint nuts tight. Remove the rod.

PITA for original springs, but aftermarket ones are a snack.

Hi
I have used spring compressors but because of the confined space and not being able to get the compressed springs and compressors in, I have wired the springs compressed, removed the compressors and then just slid them in tightened the balljoints and then cut the wire.

It feels like your holding a bomb when youre handling the wired springs, and it makes a hell of a bang when you cut the wire, but it works.

All the best
Roy

You could always jack the car up and put stands under it then use then put the spring in and use the jack to raise the lower control arm until you can get the nut onto the lower ball joint.

That is how you do it easily with aftermarket springs. Its not that easy with original springs as they are generally about 3" longer.

Thanks Roy, the bit about holding a bomb made me laugh. Also makes me not want to try it.......

To avoid the hassle just buy a pair of aftermarket springs in any height. They go straight in as gtrpu describes.

Listen to hk1837, aftermarket springs, no need for spring compressors or lethal bits of wire.

save your money!!!

just muscle them in!, get a pry bar and force them in, use your foot to push the control arm down and lever them into postion then place jack the control arm up and jack it up, ive done it plenty of times

standard springs arnt easy to put back in, but spending money on new ones is crazy

Got em in. Used a couple of bits of angle and bolts to compress them internally. Got them sitting where I needed them, then jacked the lower control arm up, undid the backyard compressors, and bolted the ball joints up. s*** of a job.

I didnt mean get new aftermarkets. I meant find secondhand ones. They are everywhere. Just ask Greg how many cars have them.

I did actually have a set of aftermarket springs in the garage for 4 or 5 years from a wagon I stripped. Got sick of moving them around and tripping over them so threw them out. Kicking myself now.
