Gday all,

I'm looking at getting a ute to give me a way to carry loads as and when I need to and as general transport to and from work mainly. Rather than get something modern I'm looking at something older which should have a bit more character and hold its value better.

I don't really have the facilities for a restoration or major rebuild so what are the chances that I can find a ute in Perth in nice condition that I can use as a daily driver for the next few years without needing to do any major work. Or am I dreaming and should just give it up and by a modern ute?

I've seen a few potentials on the web but what are my chances of buying a dog which is going to turn into a money pit?

Cheers, Dave

HQ-WB as an everyday driver are fine, but to get a really good one that needs no work youll pay over $10,000. Anything less will have to have money spent on it. A really nice no rust (ever) HZ or WB ute or tonner with an injected 5L will probably cost $13,000 or more. Sure youll find a good original HQ-WB ute or tonner for $5,000 but itll be an old 6cyl or 253 that doesnt like modern fuel, probably needs suspension and steering work and will probably be too low geared. Plus it will probably have rust coming out from past repairs. Something like this:

Id consider something like this though. Youll get them even cheaper in 6cyl auto:

Or if you want a cheapy something like this:

Just watch the later VS manuals as they have Getrags and are expensive for clutches.

Hard to say. It does have air and steer, but these old A/C always seem to need work of some kind. 3 week old paint bothers ne a bit, God knows whats underneath it! Bulletproof driveline though. If it is what you want, take note of the "negotiable" word and offer something like $6-7,000. Youll find a 2003 VY 1-tonner in a V6 manual for around that sort of money and itll drive better and use less fuel than a 308 on LPG. My bet, and from my experience owning dozens of them, is a HZ like that will probably need some of the following in the next 2 years:

Radiator
Starter motor
Alternator
At least 1 balljoint
Drag link or tie rod or idler
Brakes work of some description
At least 1 welch plug
Water pump

Ive only ever had on HQ-WB since 1990 that I could just buy and use, and that was because the prior owner had spent about $5,000 on it which included just about new everything mechanically. Even the 108,000kM HJ Premier I just bought needs lower balljoints (changed in 1990) and rear welch plugs. Im not saying a 2003 VY V6 with 150,000kM wont need something but at least you can get all the bits easily, and its only 7 years old. HQ-WB are good old cars but they are really today an enthusiasts car that you do have to work on, and getting harder to justify as an everyday driver.

or go for a ute with a strong 253/4.2 lt on duel fuel, reasonable power and better economy than a 308, I had a 253 running in my WB van for years on gas/petrol it did the job fine .
