whats the go with this does anyone really know?

I would have thought a 1973 pour block was too early for
an L34?

I guess if you believe what some wrote that these blocks were designed for the LJ XU2 which was killed off for the SLR5000 it would put it in 1973.

Someone is having a lend of him. XU2 was the name for L34 anyway.

XU2 is the option number for an SL/R5000 (LH & LX). e.g. an LH SL/R5000 is LH8VD69 plus XU2.

L34 is the option number for an L34.

Cloudy, the XU1 V8 was killed off in 1972. AFAIK at that time there were no special blocks.

the XU2 started off with 253 but then had a 308 put in it

The XU2 was never an LJ.

The XU1 V8 was called just that & on some documentation it was referred to as the XU1 Series 2.

The only reference to XU2 prior to 1973 was as a nickname used by HDT, or so their memory says.

Havent we been through this before. Next well be talking about the high-performance HP blocks or Canadian Grey Motors.

thats right dr terry also known as project XW-7 if you have september 1990 of street machine there is a great story of the xu1 v8 and what was going to be!! we had stuart underwood at our torana meeting last year who worked at holden for over 40 years he had all the drawing and tech data for us to look at also present was joe felice they told us all about the v8 xu1

I spoke to a guru today. All the X cast 308 blocks known so far have been 1973 date code. The later examples used in L34 were mid 1974 cast and mainly had no X on them. The X blocks would have been destined for F5000 use probably. These were probably the start of the HJ style blocks used for TH400 or 4speed (or trimatic in LH).

In the first link, I think the quote that says it all is:- "And it was more than likely that the XU-2 name would have been used." For most of his article he refers to the XU1 V8.

The second link is to a picture of a GTR-X not an XU1 V8.

All of the prototype photos that I have seen of cars with XU-2 decals are those of LH Toranas, not LJs. Can anyone find any documentation from 1972/73 that mentions an XU-2 ?

Hi Dr Terry,Really more interested in the X308 as I asked,it seemed to
go for alot of money and that caught my eye,so not really worried too
much about "fluffy" memories anyway,no_ones really sure about alot of
things that went on.So really just the engine story I was after,hence the derailed comment.(including me..lol!)

The only GM-H reference I have ever found to XU2 is in the LH Torana parts book.

All documentation on the LJ is XU1 - V8 that I have seen.

ive never heard of a XU-2?, after a bit of google searching it turns out everyones uncles mates sister in laws boyfriend has had 1, lol

no solid proof though, just stories
