They cannot do anything with them. If you are worried cover the last letter of the BODY number, chassis number and VIN number.

What do you think someone would be able to do with the info? Even if they made an identical set of tags, what good would it do them? Warren Edited by user Monday, 3 May 2010 5:21:24 PM(UTC)

Im with Byron & Warren on this one.
What is the issue ?? What unscrupulous fraud could be carried out ??
If you want to hide them that is your choice, but why ??

My misconception of this subject was based upon the actions of other monaro owners who are very secretive and will not show photos of their ID tags online when requested.
I have never been asked to show mine until now, and was just wondering what all the fuss was about and if it was ok.

There is a very good reason why you should keep identifiable details of anything of value private. That being corrupt police or public servants who may use those details to target and steal your property.

And this is exactly why so many are secretive. The FACT is the body id plate and VIN plate have nothing to do with registration. So the Police and others can do NOTHING with this info.
But comments like Lunchbox have made become "fact".
The ony numbers anyone needs to target your car is the rego number, engine number or chassis number in some states. Rego departemnts hold no other numbers.
Also as everything is on computer, if your car is accessed it is recorded, so if your car is stolen, the first thing they do these days is go into the rego computer and check to see if it has ben accessed. If so they start to track it.
When my car was featured in a magazine int he 80s a friend working for the Police as a contractor, told me to be more secure with my car as thieves at the time were targeting cars via their rego and I left my plates on.
So finally, the numbers in question are not traceable through the rego department, only engine and chassis number. If you have given your rego number then any dishonest peerson can go hard already.

Warren, the question was concerning "body tags", and as this is a loose definition and would probably include the ADR tag with the chassis number on it (late HT/HG), and this number is recorded in rego details, then my warning stands. If you think that some criminal syndicates cannot access these details without raising a flag then you are simply deluded.

Yes ADR tag does have chassis number, but other tags are of no use.
Security of Rego department computers would be reasonable. Nothing is impossible, but unlikely. I do not think I delusional for having faith in rego department computers. But corrupt Police cannot simply look it up for you, they would also need to be hackers.
But all they need is the rego number anyway. How easy is that to get.
Also if selling your car, 99% of people will ask for these numbers to do a REVs check.

well lunchbox you may as well hide your car away and never drive it as i have said a million times all we can do is make sure we have the right insurance have good security at home or where ever its stored as if you dont drive it and are wont tell anyone the details ect,ect then the thieves that target these types of car,s have already started to take it off you anyway!! and we all know if they want it bad enough they will get it!!

Look, dont target me. The OP asked "is it safe" to give out these details. The facts are that No, its not completely safe. Nor are many other things in life completely safe, and you have to balance the risks for yourself once you have a thorough understanding of the risks involved.

worst they could do is get a repo set of plates made, which could be picked anyway. I think you new the answer to your question befor you came and asked, i or anybody else here would not buy a monaro with out checking it,s identity. pete.

Back tot he original question, as Lunchbox siad. It is not 100% safe to give the info if the ADR tag is involved. But this is just as risky as telling them the rego number, which is compulsary in most states.
But the far more dangerous thing to do when selling your such a car is giving out your address, as this is all they can get from giving them the chassis number anyway. (although if they have the chassis number or rego number they can track the next owner)
So do not sell the car from your own home, as the thieves will know exactly where to come and do not need corrupt people to help them.

not targeting you at all mate just saying if you wrap your car up in cotton wool the thieves have won so and i dont see how giving your tag details can harm just make sure there on the monaro register as if they are on there the tags are useless to anyone else!! i have given my tag details out plenty of times and suprise suprise i havent seen anyone trying to replicate my cars there are always people taking pics at shows ect,ect so its no different imho Edited by user Monday, 3 May 2010 10:14:18 PM(UTC)

who is going to steal them these days anyway? realistically, what on earth are you going to go with a stolen(for example)HT GTS 350 car?? you might be able to pinch some bits of it and use them here and there, but honestly, are you going to try sell the bits off on ebay??
