I have seen quality control paint splotches on GT Falcons and even an 186S HK.
But my question is, were there any for the EH? and if so, where were they located?
Does someone have a scan copy of the windscreen assembly pages?
While i'm at it the 1970 HG 350 as well.

Sorry can't help with Quality control markings for Holdens, but I can tell you that LJ Toranas had various paint daubs, but these were for waranty purposes as best as I can tell.
The steering adjustment points are painted and the filler plugs for the diff and gearbox had an orange coloured paint. The paint colour seems to have changed from time to time MY 1975 HJ Statesman had dark green paint at various adjustment and fill points.
Hope this helps in some way.

These marks are still in use today, they are used as check marks to show that something has been checked by the inspector or operator. we use them where I work in the panels we send to Holdens.

The quality control marks on HK are very few and then start to increase over time, to the point that today every litle item has a mark on it.
Mike has pointed out the green paint on fill points, such as trans dip stick and adjustment points such as front suspension shims. But they are also on the driver's engine mount bracket on a 6 cylinder, plus the fuel line at the fuel pump. on HZ. I have been investingating these for some time, but have found no definitive rule, other than during the HQ to HZ period they all seem to be on the driver's side. Which would indicate that that they were there for someone to check everything had been done befor ethe car was started and driven off the line.
Now that is just a theory, and until you find someone from the productionline management you will never know.
As for the EH, I would suggst that during the EH they probably had none, or it was something like a chalk mark, simular to what is next to the VZ fender bolts.
The assembly line instructions became what we know as the build sheet during the HK, prior to that they used stickers on the windows in HK and before that I am not sure.
I do not have a HG 350 sheet, but if you are looking for some of the codes I can help, as many have sent me copies of their sheets to me for research.

Hi John, I recently found a chalk mark on my Winton Red EH Special Sedan. The mark is a 'P' in white chalk, central & 100mm tall, on the auto tunnel. I am the second owner & first to do any major work. I removed the original floor coverings so I can presume the 'P' was from factory. Regards, John. Utility8 |

different letter marks can also mean what shift it was made on or the operator/inspectors initial. we had different marks to tell what shift things were made on.

I have found letters in white on the front end of a few EH's in the past. I was just interested to see whether the green bloch was used back in 'the day'

last year I rebuilt an EJ and it has some writing on the passenger side of the firewall, due to the pain wearing off, cannot say if it was before or after paint. I did not paint over it, so that it could be kept as a record.
I doubt they are quality control marks though as they are on the wrong side.

That will probably be the paint colour. MY Pagewood built 1957 Chev had "Shannon" written in the same place in chalk. The car was Shannon Green. I have a photo of the text here somewhere.

When I pulled the floor convering out of my HQ for the first time since leaving the factory there was a strip of paper with a whole lot of dots punched out of it. It looked like very early computer tape or similar so I am assuming GM-H had some from of computerised production broadcast system even then

Yes GM-H introduced a computer based assembly broadcast part way through HK. I have seen those tapes for HT.

If your cars are Pagewood assembled then this should assist. I have spent a lot of time looking at Sydney cars and have found that a 1" brush dipped in Grecian white paint is used in a number of places on the car. The front crossmember will have a daub as will the stabiliser shaft. The engine mountings and transmission mount will also have them. The gear shift mechanism and rear axle also have these daubs. Green was used on the nuts at the fuel pump and carby inlet. There will have been more used but these are what I have included on my GTS 350 to date. Holden didn't go overboard with these daubs by the look of things. The GT guys have taken things way too far with paint markings as a car would have never left the factory with so many marks and colours as you see on every example for sale.

Hello guys, I do agree with the green paint marks on fill points of HJ's and on the engine mount brackets. Yesterday I found a yellow paint mark on the bottom side of the lower control arm from a HQ - Z, sorry can't tell which vehicle it came from.
My friend has a red paint mark on this lower inside heater ducting from his LC Torana and I have seen paint marks on the Torana steering collumns too.
So there are more paint marks to be found.
Mike
