hey yall,
been trying to nut out noise i am getting from either auto, diff, and ot tail shaft,
it is definately comes when driving, when acelerating it is their, when cruising it is there, but when backing off it aint there,
has a slight bell sound to it, and it is almost like a uni is slightly touching the exhaust pipe??
this all started after i put her in reverse at 120k,s, but it has made it back up here to queensland from melbourne,
i thought maybe the diff centre is slightly loose? or something like that?
have looked and cannot see anything touching anywhere near the exhaust, it does sound like it is coming from middle of van?
it got quite marked yesterday,
your thoughts mucho appreciated,
cheers

it was but yesterday, i thought myself a fragment, quivering without rythum in the sphere of life.
now i know i am the sphere, and all of life quivers in rythmic fragments, within me!

Shifting into reverse at 120? Best for me so far was a racing change from second to neutral at 110.

Possibly torque convertor? They are not that structurally sound I have found out, and a right bugger to diagnose. Had a shudder andslip in my auto. Rebuild showed box was shift kitted and recently reconned, and sound as a pound. Took the convertor in, and when they split it, half the vanes were bent, probably by the other half which had fallen off completely.

NZV8 blog for "Family Car" - worth checking out - had an issue with driveline vibration which turned out to be a shagged convertor (after checking / replacing much of the driveline).

I vote tailshaft too.Dont think its the convertor because of no other
side effects.the "ting ,ting sound",sounds like its on the outside. Also check around your starter, exhaust manifolds etc,for something that may have been"shocked"loose.....let us know what you find.

hey thanks fellas,
drove into mechs and guess what,,it would not do it!!
i will jump under tomorrow, and triple make sure it is not exhaust rattling, it is somethang to do with driveline, methinks,, cause it only does it when moving, not idling, does not appear to make noise in reverse??
it almost has a similiar sound as when i put it in reverse? a slight bell sound, very slight though.
will keep fault findering,
if it is torque converter, what the ramifications of failure, eg damage to anythang else? also whats the cost of new torque converter?
cheers

I've also had the "ting ting ting" sound that I thought was a uni. It only happened under light acceleration - on the over-run & hard acceleration, it wasn't there. Ended up being a chipped tooth on the pinion in the diff. The tapping travels up the tailshaft tube, which acts like an amp.

Cheers,

Mick

You're yet to explain how how managed that miraculous shift!!!

The shock could have chipped a tooth somewhere, i'm liking that theory.

Easy to do. I've done it in a Jeep Cherokee before. You come up to a corner and go to downshift from 4th to 3rd just like you do in your 4 speed HZ most days. Only problem is that the 2 movements a 4 speed does easily becomes something completely different when you do it in an auto.

BCB, I've got a similar noise in a T400 but it's only when it's in 1st. Haven't tried to diagnose it yet.

ok ok ok,,
i will explain how i stuck her in reverse at 120klm>>>
when i made my adapter arms to fit the floor shift to the t400, in the 98transit, [an incredible engineering feat, with just hand tools] i was about 1/4inch out on lenght with the holes for the bolts!
this means it is a very short distance from D to N and then to R, when i hit one of the long downhill runs on the nth of sydney, i would just stick her in neautral and roll down.
i just was not gentle enough on this particular hill/

by the by, i put her up on jack, and gave her some revs,,she would not make noise!
[come to think of it,, ex gf didnt either!!]
it is not rear uni, au rubber type, front uni seems solid, 308/vb type,
will need expert second opinion.
cheers

"ex gf didn't either"... hahaha love it.

Usually they make plenty of noise when they're up on jack. Don't reckon you'll get a diagnosis for that one, lol.

Coming dear... no it's just a car forum... OK we'll go shopping then.

Look for little green men with bells on the end of their shoes. Also look for wear marks on the inside of the cover.

amazing!!
drove to auto eggspert, asked him to listen to clunk klink noise?? it bloody would not do it!!!!!
it had been getting very noticeable as well,, and continuous..
so drove over his really huge gutter into his workshop driveway, and believe it or not, it has not made a sound since!!!!!
he said it may be dry uni,s and or centre bearing?
gremlins? must have been the twisting driving into his driveway has realigned whatever it was?

Q. he said the uni,s should be aligned? i was told they should be at 90deg for balance? which is correct?
thanks already
cheers
