I'm going to get a sump plug welded into the bottom of my diff housing to make changing centres a quicker/cleaner affair. I reckon oxy welding is the pick for this and go see my local radiator repair bloke but mate argues that using the mig be best so figure i'd ask and see what you guys advise ?

what type of material are you welding? assuming it is a steel diff housing and a steel socket for the sump plug to screw into mig will be fine . as long as person welding knows what thier doing, watch out for the fuel tank cause its pretty close to the diff disconnect battery too.--keeo

It's steel, a 9" for my HK. The diff is out and the fuel tank hasn't been in for about five years :-) S'pose i can bang a lower stud through but i'd prefer not; plus it couldn't be any easier at the moment as i've got it apart and yet to paint it. http://gallery.oldholden...tml?g2_imageViewsIndex=1Edited by user Thursday, 27 May 2010 1:05:32 PM(UTC)

hi 80737k cool diffs out that makes it easy then.leak test it after its welded by step1.mix metho with chalk powder to make a paste step2.paint onto welded area let dry for 5mins itll be a white powder 3. spray wd40 onto back of weld inside diff carefully 4.look closely at welded area any holes even pin holes will show up as a dark spot (black) within minutes or seconds and gradualy get bigger.. 5
.if black spot appears ya got hole so grind out and go again. for a smick job it could be tig welded .-cheers keeo
