Hi I am not preaching on behalf of our friends at GM-H and Rare Spares and some may not like to agree but now that GM-H has put it's name in the ring ALL parts with their brand name on them MUST be considered to be genuine parts and therefore cannot be negatively affected when Judged in car shows. Before you all go calling me names for bringing this up I state that my HK GTS was restored using heaps factory new old stock parts. So if this is correct then my car would be one which could be challenged by a fresh restoration using the Rare Spares-Holden Parts. As much as I dislike Rare Spares' LAME excuses for pedalling items in it's range which are of poor fit and quality i.e. (and I quote):" If it doesn't fit, send it back for a full refund" has no regard for the time, effort and expense people go through in the in the buying process (VERY UNPROFESSIONAL)the fact remains that these bits have the GM-H brand name on them. Some just want to sh1tbag companies like RS without fully understanding the huge investment this company has made. Teaming with Holden looks like a logical solution to the absolute drought of hard to get bits available for old Holdens. Take a look at GM USA and there is now a huge range of GM branded paerts which are considered acceptable in show. It took them a while to get it right but their range is better than it was. It seems to me that there is a degree of customer dissapointment in RS when it comes to price quality and fit. If GM-H is fair dinkum about their standards and expectations then they will drive quality and value into this new joint venture. Affordable quality is the reason for the success of GM-H since it started and if this is not applied to this partnership it would most definately affect it's reputation with other areas of it's business like new car sales. Like many of us who have an old Holden in the shed we more than likely have a late model Holden daily driver as well. Cheers Nick Moran Yamba NSW 8 F1 World titles. 10 Bathurst wins......HA!HA! Hi Nick.
The whole 'concours judging' thing is a minefield, but I have been involved at many levels over the years, so I'll throw in my take on RS/GM-H parts acceptability.
It all comes down to the concours rules as written by the organisers themselves. How much authenticity is counted towards the final point score. At many of the shows that I have attended (as a judge) they wouldn't necessarily consider a part as 100% acceptable purely on the basis of it being a 'genuine' GM-H replacement part.
For example, if you have 2 near identical cars side by side built to the same level of fit & finish & all parts are genuine, the winner IMHO would be the car with the most number of original parts fitted. If GM-H makes a running change mid-way thru a model program, the replacement parts as sold a few years down the track, would more likely be the updated part. The original earlier car with its factory original part would then be more 'correct' than the later GM-H replacement (whether RS or not).
A good example would be HK/T/G front guards & bonnets. As we know there are minute differences between a 1968 HK guard & a genuine replacement guard, as sold in say 1972. The same goes for the bonnet, is a genuine HG style bonnet 100% 'correct' for an HT GTS even though it is a 100% genuine replacement part.
Now, if RS produces a good reproduction HK style guard & this part is accepted by the organisers, then that part (again IMO) would be more 'concours correct' than a genuine HG guard.
Food for thought.
Dr Terry.

Why does it always need to be NOS. Why can't it be 2nd hand refurbished or hand made. Dr Terry _______________________________________ The best argument against democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter. |

At this point the Monaro nationals have already made a ruling on this.
Section 3 reads as:
Replacement parts must be period correct and of a type installed on the assembly line. This means that the period of manufacture of all replaceable parts shall match - ie the radiator cap shall match the build date of the battery, oil filter and spark plug leads, etc. The only exception to this rule are the glass sealing rubbers where current reproduction items are permitted.
I questioned the last part of this statement and was told that every other part for a Monaro is available from some source as NOS and therfore all Monaros in concours shall have no reproduction parts. So in a nut shell, the only rares spares or other reproduction parts allowed in concours is the window rubbers.

I'm confused (easily done), what is the difference between "replacement" & "reproduction" Packard high tension leads for example.

This is a good point for discussion. What scores better in concours in say an HK: 1. Original 40+ year old ignition leads, in sad, aged condition. 2. Genuine GM-H replacement set, dated late 70s. 3. Aftermarket, near perfect repro lead set with period date markings. 4. GM-H/RS near perfect repro lead set with period date markings. To throw a spanner in the works, for authenticity (IMO) they are equal, which is why I posed the question. Yeah, but NOS window rubbers are just as likely to come up for sale as tyres. I was just making a point about what Warren reported that he was told (not questioning you Warren, just commenting on the "rules") NOS bits for the rest of a Monaro are available for Concours. In fact I reckon I'd have a better chance of tracking down NOS window rubbers than I would with tyres. In fact I think I have NOS door vent rubbers and the rubbers that go between the front and rear windows. Never seen a NOS HK tyre before. I doubt you'd find NOS Holden V8 or 6cyl gaskets anymore either. You might find stuff for later versions like sump gasket for a VSIII but not ridgy didge original 1970 gaskets. _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? |

I knew Nick has NOS tyres. I still reckon I could find NOS rubbers easier than tyres!
