Thanks.

are you meaning the orginal holden workshop manuals?

if so then every model got a suppliment manual (for example HJ suppliment)to cover the changes, for everything that wasn't changed you have to refer to the HQ manuals

Just clarify that, the 6 HQ manuals are meant to carry over all the way to WB & as dave has said each model series supposedly had a supplement.

But, in the late 70s somebody in the workshop manual department went to sleep. As a result there were no 'real' HX or HZ supplements ever printed. They did however produce a WB supplement, a Blue Motor supplement & also ones for transmissions & diffs, as well as a small one for WB II. There were also several printed to cover ADR27A anti-pollution gear & carburettor changes.

There is a reprint of the HJ manual on the market that has been produced more recently, which includes the various internal 'Service Bulletins' relating to HX & HZ series upgrades. There is some good info in them, including circuit wiring diagrams that don't appear elsewhere.

Am I missing something? I recently picked up a set of HQ manuals, only came with 5 books... Is there a 6th one or was that a typo?

No, not a typo, there are 6 HQ workshop manuals. The 6th book covers all the additional stuff for utes, vans & One-tonners. These were introduced later than the sedans, coupes & wagons.

The 6th manual is much rarer than the other 5.

These are the service manuals I have been able to find:

Vol 1: Body and Sheet Metal
Vol 2: Suspension, Brakes, Steering, Wheels & Tyres
Vol 3: Rear Axles, Transmissions, Prop Shaft & Unis
Vol 4: General Info, Engine and Clutch, Cooling, Fuel, Engine Tune up
Vol 5: Electrical, Instruments, wiring, lighting, aircon
The next ones are reprints of the Holden Publications:

1. Holden improved performance L6 & V8 Engines
2. HJ & Statesman inclduing HX & HZ service notes
3. Statesman and WB Series supplement
4. Emission Control Systems service manual supplement

These additional ones show details of HJ-X-Z and WB cars. The HJ one has way too much information on a thing called Brake Anti-Lock Control for Statesman. I've never seen ABS on a 1976 car - has anyone?

Wow Dr Terry, there is a lot of information there. Did you notice in HJ Supplement M37545, Group 5 regarding ABS. Was this common in production?

No it wasn't that commonplace.

It was called the Delco-Moraine anti-lock rear drum brake system. It wasn't like modern ABS, it was an electro-mechanical unit. It was only fitted to 308/TH400 cars (usually Statesman Caprice models). I've only seen a few dozen in total over the years. They seem to be very reliable, but I have carried out repairs on 3 of them.

When the HZ series was released with rear disc brakes, they totally disappeared off the options list.
