Mate, we tried everything when they where new, from heat to even piano wire, i dunno what they used from factory, but it was very good and i think out of the 40 odd VL's i owned in the days maybe i got 5-6 of without some form of damage to them, bonus was then you could still buy them new, so it really didnt matter

I have removed them successfully using a paint scraper very carefully. The paint scraper method is very risky to the paint job though. I have also removed Ford ones using fairly thick fishing line which is much less hazardous to the cars paint.

The glue (double sided tape) is another matter I have used turps and a LOT of rubbing after picking what I could off with my fingernails either way it's a bitch of a job spelled with a capital C.

Also at this time of year a bit of mild heating with a hairdryer or fan heater can help make the glue a bit softer and the trims a bit less brittle.

Dunno about other parts but today in Canberra it's about 10 c and threatening to snow!

today when i got time i took the rest of the plastic sides off
how i did this was i put the grinding disc on the angle grinder and very very carefully grinded long the top of the plastic where the glue was stuck to it on the other side, doing this untill the plastic had be grinded down to the glue. after doing this all the way, it took only a few seconds to remove the side's and most of the glue, now i only have to wash the black marks off with some turps where the glue once sat, and it will be good as new!!!
cheers

Just remember that even if you have damaged oned it id possible to have them plastic welded....or glued together. even if they come up rough they can be filled and hand finished to achieve the original shape. If you are repainting the panels it doesn't matter that much whether you hurt the paint so go the scraper and piano wire if that's the case.

Plenty of boys out there keeping the old VLs alive so I am surprised that no one has taken a set of plugs and remade fibreglass ones......

having alot of trouble getting the glue to come off tryed using turps and it isnt working. i have got this pre wash stuff it works but it took me 2 hours today to remove half of it off of one door!!!! still 3 and a half doors to go....... going to be a mission and a half!!!!

go to a paint shop, buy some gun wash ( cheap recycled thinners ) test it out on the car (somewhere not obvious ) to make sure it doesn't lift the paint (acrylic paint will lift) 2K will be fine.... it will remove that crap easily......

Cheers

Get yourself a "Caramel wheel" from a panel beater supply place.
It's like a rubber buffing wheel. It strips urethane off the paint, without damaging the paint.

Otherwise, if you don't want to risk it, some panelbeaters will remove the residue for a small fee - a mate of mine had a VX done for a cold carton on a friday arvo - took them 15 minutes!

Cheers,

Mick
