Any pre-ADR tag vehicles I have ever owned have had the 'tags' thrown in the bin.

I think the stigma with removed tags is that it can put doubt on a car to wether someone purchased tags and made a mock up of a model, to some people it de-values the car.
I have seen at swapmeets where a coupe has been for sale with miss-matched tags from a sedan to try and shaft the next owner.

Errr, up to HK would tags have been a factory fitted accessory then? lol.

Seems that way, you only need the body stamp and and an engine number to make em legal.

Well,if you buy a car with tags that were screwed on,pop riveted on or missing tags etc, then,at first glance, the correct id of the car is in doubt. Also could it be a re-shell or cut and shut?

But,if the car is the real deal, with its own tags, that have been taken off for resto purposes,i cant see a problem with re-riveted tags.

At the end of the day,you want what you have paid for.

Like it or not, people are still paying a premium for cars,so you cant blame them for being fussy.
If i forked out 200K for a Monaro i would at least want one that never had the tags interfered with.

My hq GTS coupe had a rather large BBQ under the hood and melted the tags, it is in rough shape at present and no tags. When she is rebuilt if anyone was serious about buying it they can check the firewall build stamp and figure out what it is with holden, most people just are not that serious..

fire wall number is just a body number, chassis number or vin would have been recorded for rego, Holdens records are a bit sad for earlier cars

holden has got squat, they just tell you what you want to hear, same as ford. Imagine the following re-enactmant:

RING RING RING
operator: "hello gm fishermans bend, how can i help you"

redneck dingbat: "yeah g'day, i getting a 327 HK GTS, can ya tell me when ya's built it?????

operator: "one moment i'll check for you"

after many a few minutes waiting the redneck grows impatient, statrs screaming down the receiver as he guzzles down another 4XXX

operator: "sorry to keep you waiting but its a long walk down to archive building 74E where HK monaro archives are kept, and let me tell you this box is heavy, must have been a few monaros built that day.."

redneck dingbat: "grunts...."

operator; "ok, i found it...the build card is alittle greasy, maybe the foreman on the day didnt wipe his hands before he gave it to recordes department for archive filing.hehehhehe(innocent giggles)..your HK GTS car was built on the 27 august 1969 with optionS A47 L66 N40 AS8 D15 in 13135 shade with delete stripes. if you would like to obtain a letter of authenticity from us, please hold and i will transfer you to accounts where a $45 fee is applicable for delivery of the letter"

redneck dingbat: "huh??? my HK is 1968, and warwick yellow.. dunn make sense.."

operator: "well i'm sorry, but thats the records that we have for car.."

redneck dingbat: "grunts..i see..hmmm"

operator: "is there anything else i can help you with today? coz i gotta get my archive box back to building 74e before the next monaro or EH or torana enthusiast calls to get some details, and if this box isnt there, i will get into trouble by leo's mum who still comes in to do the feather dusting on the old archives and typewriters"

redneck dingbat: "no i just want me letter"

operator: "putting you through to accounts, have a great day...giggles..hehehe"

a few days later the redneck receives his letter from GM atating the obvious, and about the only thing that they got correct was that GM did build that car, not ford, not toyota, not chyrsler but GM, everything else was just as grey as it was before hand..
