My dad and I are restoring a 1974 HQ Statesman 350. We can't find any definition or background on our model. We think its a deville (84669QR) . Its badged chev throughout but unlike the South African or other export models it doesnt have a vinyl roof. 10 bolt diff. Anyone know anything about these cars? Ie was the NZ export different ?

It's a Chev, not a Statesman. Just looks like a Statesman! I gather it has no ADR plate or Engine number or chassis number? But will have BODY and VIN plates?

I think we need Dr Terry on this one! To be a Chev I don't think it should have an engine or chassis number?? If it was a car originally built for NZ it shouldn't have an engine number or chassis number. The engine number should probably be 11QU13323K... The numbers after that don't seem right as they should be MMDD eg 0304 means 4th March. The last letter should be an H not an M. Chassis number will be EHQ19129S. If you like PM me the VIN number and i'll see what I can find out about it.

This is a Chevrolet 350 , as pointed out , marketed in NZ as replacement for USA chevs , none assembled in NZ , lots of different spec cars in NZ , bench seat / bucket seat -- p/w or not..... top spec was bucket seat , floor shift , p/w , air/cond . no vinyl roof is unusal . I have full parts book for this car if you need to know anything. Mark

Why does it have engine and chassis numbers though? Chassis number cannot be 6 numbers, only 5. Last one has to be an S.

The engine number is an odd one though. I though all McKinnon HQ engines were in the format KxxxxH. I haven't heard of an 8M suffix.

Thanks for input so far, its registered as a 1974 Holden Chevrolet 350. Factory Bucket seats, power windows, air conditioning. Would love to see anything that exactly matches our car!

Yes Byron , the 8 should be H , it is the same thing on one of my 350s, stamping very small and hard to read , whoever wrote the details down when it was first regoed , weather write or wrong , that is what the rego papers say . It can be corrected , thur LSTA , but long process. Mark.

I talked to Ben Stewart about this one today. The 8M on the end of the engine number is normal for USA 1974 model engines fitted to a Holden or Statesman. The reason I'd never seen one is because no HQ GTS350 coupe ever got one, they were all 1973 model engines. The only cars to get the later engines were Statesmans and the last of the XW8 M41 Kingswoods. The engines were either 8L, 8M or 8N suffix (8 meaning Holden as it does on carbies). These were the engines fitted with 882 heads and Chev Rochesters (as opposed to Holden Rochesters).

Shellsy, if you send me the ID details of the car we can look it up on the records and find out more about it. Ben will also be able to tell you if the chassis number is wrong for the car as without an ADR plate you can't tell obviously.

Just the details of the 2 x ID plates on the car. The important one is the skinny VIN plate. Just PM them.
