Guys - especially Absinth, Jason, Hainzy, Blocker and other Sandman fanatics! HZ GTS owners might know too.
Just have a coupe of Sandman specific items I need to find out.
1. HZ Sandman steering wheels. Trim list section of HZ parts catalogue states that all Sandman and GTS got black steering wheels. There are 3 x colours listed for ALL however in the text: black, dark buckskin and dark carmine. Sandman didn't get 77C trim so the Carmine wheel is out. So has anyone seen an original 63C trimmed HZ Sandman or GTS and noted whether it defintely had a black wheel or Dark Buckskin steering wheel and horn pad? These will be 10/78 onwards examples. I just want to make sure the parts catalogue is right!
2. Anyone have documentation showing what 67C is called in HZ? Is it just Brown like 67V was called on HZ HOLDEN with a bench seat? (67V is Tan on Kingswood and Sandman but Brown with bench on HOLDEN).
3. HJ-HZ Sandman van or HX-HZ Kingswood van. Anyone got access to one of these bodies without it's rear headlining attached? If you have, can you have a look at the centre roof support that runs from side to side under the roof sheetmetal. Does it have a series of holes across the back edge? If so, what is it for? Is it functional to the rear headlining somehow? The couple I have access to have these holes, but non-Sandman or non HX/HZ Kingswood dont.
4. As above, but for an Elizabeth van body (so Pagewood, Dandenong or Elizabeth assembled van). Can anyone possibly get a close-up photo of where the headlining side attachment strips join the inner panels at the front? I have photos of Acacia Ridge examples, but all the local Elizabeth bodies I know of have headlinings installed.

Byron I will drop you a email with a pic of the sandman I just sold. Its Eliz built. For question 4.
Question 3 I will also grab some happy snaps for this one.
Question 1. I can not 100% confirm but I believe parts book it correct. I have never seen buckskin wheels on a Sandman. It wouldnt have made sence to anyway as the coloum was always black also. Not trim colour like others models.
Cheers Jason

That black headlining in that HZ van may well be original. Buckskin headlining was only optional on 18V trim in HZ Sandman. Black was standard.

#3 something I should have said is yes the series of holes are for little screws that hold the wire and hoodlining. The wire is only about 2mm. There is a 5mm spring wire either side of the centre bar holding the hoodlining. There is also the extra strip as you mention on either side. These have holes im them for the larger bows. Also retians the edges of the pinchweld. I thought there where on all vans but sounds like they are not. =) Not sure too but seems that there was plastic plugs in the holes to support the 2 5mm dia bars.
Cheers Jason

Thanks Jason
I think that answers 2 of the questions. I know what the side strips do, I was interested in where the strip joins the inner cabin at the front.

The above link is to a Brisbane built Holden van in NZ with 67C trim and it appears to have been originally brown.

That HZ van in NZ is a 6cyl HZ hence not a Sandman. It is hard to tell the color exactly as 67C buckets would be the same trim as Kingswood, but it is the doortrims that use different material in HOLDEN (except Sandman and Ambulance).
Jason i'm not after pictures, just after what wheel went with 63C on GTS and Sanndman as the parts catalogue contradicts itself.

Anyone know what the colour is on that van? BODY plate says 2273 looks like a two-tone code, but the paint line says what appears to be X-21714 or X-11714 _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? |

Ok not a problem Byron. My 63C trim HZ sandman did come with a black wheel and black coloumn. Its had 4 owners in its life. The original owner and than 2 mates of mine now me. Both mates held onto the steering wheel when a sports one was fitted. When my first mate brought the ute it was very stock he said. Only thing was it had had a respray in original colour. I also went through all the HZ GTS cars I have on my register as I have about 10 photos of each car on there. www.hzgts.netNone of them at all with a C or T (T is commie trim with cloth insert) have a coloured wheel. They are all black. There is only 3 or 4 63C/T trims. The blue trims all have black wheels also. I have seen blue wheels for sale before but none are fitted to any of the original HZ GTS's I have on there. Doubt most would go to the trouble to chage the wheel. Specialy find the HZ cap also.... _______________________________________ www.stickthisdecals.com.au |

Adam, can't be a 2/78 with 23C as C type codes didn't appear until about 10/78. So it must be later than 9/78. The only other blue available was 23V but i'm almost certain it was Kingswood only in commercials.
There is no doubt blue trimmed Sandmans got black wheels, as there were no blue GTS wheels on HZ Sandman or GTS, that was WB only I think. There are only 3 x GTS wheels listed and those are black, 63 and 77, and 77 wasn't available on Sandman (only Kingswood).

11714 is Vermillion Fire I thought the comb no was a two tone as well but Tuxedo is 2214. I have both two and single tone recorded in the 23-2400 range, combos seem to get the next available number not a range to themselves Leroy "Planet earth is the asylum to which the rest of the universe sends it's lunatics" Voltaire Edited by user Saturday, 26 June 2010 2:11:01 AM(UTC)

Coloured wheels are standard on SL/E Statesman and SL/E Torana only. Blue wheels were available on SL/E Torana from memory.

No contradiction.... Trim colour charts states "black" steering wheel on Sandman and Monaro. Text section states "all" as they would fit all models and were available as an optional extra. You could order a Kingswood with Buckskin interior and option it with a sports dash, rally wheels and Buckskin sports steering wheel. Note that in the text section it lists WHEEL ASM - Rally type ........ Kingswood, Premier, De Ville, Panel Van, Utility Rally wheels were not standard on all those models but were available as an option.

Wb had dark blue and dark buckskin GTS wheels too. I forgot about UC.
How you read it is how I expected it to be Absinth. But it is a contradiction. If it was correct in the text section it would state ALL - Exc Sandman,GTS against the Dark Buckskin and Dark Carmine wheels, but these books are never that specific. I'm not surprised though. The HZ parts catalogue is that full of errors and misleading information it isn't funny. It is a good resource to fill in gaps but cannot be relied upon for absolute facts!
