Greetings all,
I am seeking any assistance or advice about some weird stuff with my WB ute and the brake lights. When I apply the brake, the brake light s come on, but , the front parking lights also come on. What could cause this?

Sounds like a bad earth somewhere. How butchered is the wiring?

The most likely cause is that somebody has fitted an incorrect type of globe to one of the brake light sockets. They are a dual contact, dual filament type & if a single contact style is fitted by mistake, it shorts those 2 circuits together, resulting in your current problem.

Yeah Doc but the front Parklight comes on... also the bayonet fitting is parallel on the single contact style while the double contact has offset pins. More likely something has gone wrong in the wiring, has it always had the problem or is it something new?

Sorry John, but I've gotta agree with the Doc on this one - it's a very common occurrence, even in near new cars that still run the old dual-filament bayonet bulbs, and the plastic fittings generally has enough "give" to allow the standard pins to be forced in.

For Holdens HT onwards, the parking light circuit & the tail-light circuit are one in the same. In my experience, things just don't 'go wrong in the wiring'. It usually takes a certain amount of human intervention. Many thanks to all, especially Dr Terry. Fitted some aftermarket LED tailight inserts and the problem has occured after this. How would I remedy this?

the pins on the dual filament are offset while the single filament are in line. how do they get around that? must take some ingenuity. And on these new globes with the orange colouring the pins are aligned differently again.

Nothing brute force won't fix! The plastic housings are surprisingly flexible enough to allow them to be jammed in by people who have the attitude of "it's a globe, it must fit." I've even seen standard single filament clear globes (with regular pins) jammed into the offset-pins orange globe holders in the front of a VS! You can buy orange globes without offset pins. Some poor quality cheap globes have poor pins that dont grab in both grooves. If it is old or rare - Cut it! http://www.ehlimo.com.au/ |

Thank you to all who replied and provided assistance on my problem. The information about the dual circuit has pointed me in the right direction. While I am respectful of Dr Terry's views on nearly everything,these aftermarket LEDs are vastly better from a safety point than the original globes. I think they are terrific, really bright and light pattern fills the whole lens. Just need to be mindful of the requirements to alter the original wiring when fitting them.

I realise the safety aspect of LED lights improving reaction times etc. but I've yet to see a replacement LED globe that performs well in place of an equivalent incandescent globe. I'm always happy to be proved wrong or learn of new products. BTW what alterations to the wiring ?
