Do 149, 161 & 179 share same head gasket?

Hi
Do the 149, 161 & 179 red motor share the same head gasket? Have been told they do (i.e., common part).

Hi Matt, Your question is somewhat vaugue, so I will attempt to give the full answer.
This question is like the 253 verses 308 head gasket problem, yes they do fit and run with no major problems, but if you want the correct ones they were manufactured quite different and can effect compression ratio if 308 gasket used on 253.
Now to the first part of your question. yes they do fit, but then you can also put a head gasket in backwards and they fit and work, however they get hot.
The correct answer is no they were manufactured differently to reflect the different bore sizes, for example; 149 7425993 179 7425994 161 7429472 186 7429473
So as you can see they were originally all different, if you fitted a NOS 149 gasket to a 186 you would likely run into problems. If you fitted a 186 head gasket on a 149 you would lower the compression ratio like the 253 problem. If you used a modern gasket they may well be the one size fits all attitude.
This should answer your question.

What Mike has said is 100% correct, but while the engines left the factory with their own unique head gasket it wasn't long before the bean counters had their way. In the mid 1970s they superseded the 6-cyl head gasket to the 186/202 part number. Their thinking was probably that it made negligible difference to the compression ratio (CR) anyway, along with the fact that any 'loss' in CR would be made up for in an increase in bore, because the engine was most likely being rebored/rebuilt at the time.
Interestingly they didn't do the same with the 253/308 gaskets perhaps due to the fact that the 308 gasket with its 4-inch bore had a much bigger effect on CR than it did with the small bore 6-cyl engines.

Mike is dead right too if you fit a 149 head gasket to a 186 the metal fire ring part of the gasket around the bore will burn away really quickly and then the unprotected gasket around the bores will blow.
Vandals and graffiti "artists" do everyone a favour and target parking meters and fixed speed cameras only. |

Upon thinking about it if you fit say a 186 gasket to a 149 or even let's go worst case and say 130 or 138 cubic inch engine or as discussed 308 gaskets to a 253 would the resultant drop in compression only be a temporary thing until the gap fills with carbon?
Then I suppose when the gap fills with carbon you would be likely to get pre ignition problems such as detonation and running on.
