Gday everyone,

I am now up to the point of recoing the power steer set up in my VK. I have the necessary bits, pieces and kits. I am after an exploded view of the power steer rack and pinion and the power steer pump.
The VK is an 6 cyl 85 model and the pump is located below the alternator.
If anyone can either PM me or reply with a link of where I can get the view that will be greatly appreciated.
Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

Nicho

Generally speaking, the overhaul of power steering racks & pumps is beyond the scope of the average mechanic, let alone a DIY owner.

The cost of complete exchange units, with a decent warranty makes it not worth considering doing it yourself.

Thanks Dr Terry for you reply and I appreciate the advice.
However after doing the ring around(7 business's) for quotes of what I required the cheapest that I got quoted was $300 for rack and pinion and $200 for the pump.
I do admit I did not ask how much it would cost to exchange both but none of the bussines's that I contacted offered that option either.
I do realise that I can buy these items second hand for far cheaper than that, but then I would be in the same predicament of having parts that I am not 100% sure about and the opportunity to have them recod.
Then after talking to my local parts supplier I got a price on all of the bits that I require (reco kits pump and rack, tie rod ends and rack boots) for a total of $180. So when I get the parts off layby I will endeavour to reco both the rack and pump to the best of my ability.
Dr Terry i beleive you will not take offence from me for not listening 100% to your advice. It just comes down to a dollars and cents equation.
So that leads me to my post of locating an exploded diagram of a power rack and pinion and power steer pump from a 6 cyl VK everybody?.
Please?

pumps can be done with general hand tools and a press, the rack will require special tools hence i dont think you will be doing it sucessfully at home with a hammer and cheisel, i think you will find the prices quoted would be exchange, the pump might be new i think a mob called blue were making them search the net, the problem with the pumps is that they can wear inside and be noisy even after a reco
in brisbane here we have places that we take parts like these and get the same ones back if thats what you are concerned about, im sure there would be places interstate, stay away from places like autobarn etc your better of dealing with a trusted mechanic who can supply you good parts or lead you in the right direction, just remeber if you have a go your self sealing areas where the seal run on the shaft can wear making it hard to seal, some move the seal onto a different part of the shaft, good reco places will reclaim the shaft, and if you damage the seals in the steering worm when going back together it can do all sorts of dangerous S**T good luck, your better of following dr T,s advice.
