Have just bought a HK Ute in bits. Now considering options for engine & box. I'm leaning toward a 307 'cause I have lots of Chev bits left over from previous projects and 307 was an engine for that era. I'm just a bit stumped with the selection of trans. Would prefer to go auto so the missus can drive it, even 'though the ute comes with a Supra box. Questions so far are .........
1. For a Turbo 700, how much modification has to be done to the HK floor pan? Is it best to cut a piece out of a Commie floor and weld it in? If so, just the tunnel or go further out?
2. Will a Turbo 350 fit without floor modifications?

TH350 fits straight in. You need some floor work to fit a TH400 or 4L60 (TH700). If it has a Supra box in it it may already be butchered in the floor though :-(

Thanks for that. The Supra box just came with it, the floor hasn't had the chop. I like the sound of bolt it in and forget about it. No Engineering required. Although the 4th cog would be great, think I'll go T350.

Just use a HT-HG trimatic T-bar and HK V8 powerglide crossmember & speedo cable. You'll have to drill the hole for the V8 speedo cable. Just copy a V8 HK.

That's it! From memory there should be a dimple there already for it. I think it's 22.5mm, same size as an electrician's punch.

Progressing slowly with the HK Ute, it's the usual 1 step forward, 2 steps back. While painting the inner surface of the Bailey Channel Assembly, I noticed that the two assys. that were supplied with the ute (in boxes 'cause I bought the thing in bits) are different. In the picture below, the one on the left is about 18mm wide, thre one on the right about 21 mm. Checking my other HK and a HT, the 21mm seems to be the correct one. Could the narrower one be from from another model (e.g. HR although it certainly looks to be the same as the other in all other respects) or were there some variations in the HK T G range?

Haven't added to this thread for a while. The ute had a lot more rust in it than first thought, mainly in the floor area. It also looks like it was used as a paddock basher at some stage, lots of straightening had to be done. It's spent the last 6 months on a rotisserie having some major surgery done. I ended up settling on a 307 Chev mated to a Turbo 700 auto. Didn't cut the floor brace to allow the T700 to fit, just heated it and tapped it in a little. Should still keep me under the radar of modified vehicle. Anyway, here's a few before and after shots. The body should be painted within a week or two, then I'll start the assembly process. You should have drilled the Saginaw/Powerglide speedo cable hole before you painted it, you'll need this for the TH700R4 (uses the same speedo cable). |

Thanks and you're quite correct, I should have put that speedo cable hole in. Then again, there's the holes for the air con plumbing to go in, but I don't know where yet, and probably a few others. And.... I do have a pressure pack for touch ups. It's a Ford colour, Bionic, so getting touch up is not a problem.

Love the rotisserie too. What brand is it? I wouldn't mind getting one just to store one of my Monaro shels so it takes up less space. |

Yes a nice pic or two of the rotisserie would be helpful indeed.. Sick of playing Michelangelo.
The indent on the right of the wiper pressing is where the factory aircon goes. There are two screw holes just above it too. You can see it in the photo you posted |

Can't find the business card for the rotisserie guy, but I'll keep looking. He's a mad Munro man, has a pretty potent yellow Quey. Will get back to you on his details.
Thanks for the info on the aircon Bruvpig. Not sure if I'll put the hoses through there or try to hide them somewhere.

There are two drain holes in the side of the tranny tunnel high up on the aircon models(about 10 and 2 o'�lock) you could go in there.
I'll email you a photo if you like.
What type of compressor setup are you using? That might come into consideration too. There is an elongated hole on the left side of the headlight panel near the radiator for the hoses to get to the condenser. Hiding hoses for this one is tricky

Can't find a website, you'll have to contact him for more details. Sorry, I don't have any decent photos of the Rotisserie, was more interested in what was on it. Thanks again Bruvpig. Compressor will most likely be a Sanden 7 series mounted high on the RHS. Haven't bought any of the air stuff yet. Think I know the two drain hole positions you're talking about. I'll check that out.
