g;day my ek ute it has the door look nob on the inside but on the outside it hasnt got a door key barrel lock on the outside is this strange at all this is the drivers door...is this normal? passenger side has both

Yes this quite normal in low level cars of the era.

On the passenger side as that is the side that you are suppose to enter a vehicle when parked on the side of the road.

I had an FC sedan the same pain in the bum if your by yourself, maybe it was in the days of gentlemen to open your good ladies door first ..lol

I believe utes, panelvans and "Standard" sedans and wagons only had the key lock on the passenger side. The more up market "Special" had it on both sides.

i had an EH and an FC with this same thing, bring it back i reckon, will stop tools from driving as it will be a deterent as they wont be able to see past the fact that getting into the first hurdle they face

On the passenger side as that is the side that you are suppose to enter a vehicle when parked on the side of the road,this is not the right answer.

The reason for the lock being on the left side is a carry over from the days of assembling kits out off the USA, IE there drivers side is the left. pommy cars had it on the right.then upmarket cars got a passenger side lock.from HK both sides had locks on all models as standed. it still goes on today with the yank cars have a key on the left the australian commodore now only has a key lock on the right.

cheers ive never seen it before only new to holdens so expect lots of questions.
another 2 questions
1. would the spare tyre lock be the same as the ignition lock?
2. im just doing the brakes and was wondering what yr did self adjusting drum brakes come out on a holden

The KEY is the same but the LOCK is different.

But Holden was assembling cars from England at this time, so logic would have it, when making a door here they would put the lock in the correct side. Its not like the door was from the US. Plus we put the steering wheel on the other side. This practice continued for 10 years.

Are you saying that Holden put the lock on the wrong side of a car for 10 years and no one noticed?

(Not one purchaser of a ute said to the dealer, "mate this is strange there is only one lock and its on the passenger side, so when I go out on my own I have to unlock the passenger door and slide across". And if they did no dealer reported the short coming to Holden. No one in the service garages, test fleet, reporters, motoring associations, no one.

I have also heard/read that it was because a tradesman was not allowed to enter a car from the drivers side,and that's why there is only a left door key lock on a ute or van. BUT remember no standard holden including sed and wagon(special and premier had them on both sides)had a door key lock on the right side some dealers put them in my uncle had his utes all done, ALSO note that i (that is me) have yet to See a ford or valiant early 60's ute or van without a right and/or left (KEY)door lock.

Also remember that the gm assembled cars and trucks came over from the usa as part of the whole kit (CKD) with the lock hole already in the door, so they never changed it.(ask them why).

Remember this goes back to the usa cars that holden assembled too you know.In the lower specked cars.

Also remember that the 48/215 (or as most call it wrongly the FX) is a usa designed and the prototypes where built there too
(so ask holden why the did it that way)

I had a 50/2106 (FX) ute that had the same thing. At first I put it down to shivalry.

Then I thought that it's probably because they were built in the days when not many people bothered locking their car doors especially drivers of utes which most probably were farm or delivery vehicles.


Vandals and graffiti "artists" do everyone a favour and target parking meters and fixed speed cameras only.

Not just base commercials units it was all base units (standard versions)that is Coupe utility's, van, wagon & sedan. special and premiers had both door key locks.Yes HR was the last to have no right key lock in base models. As said earlier in the tread HK was the first to have Key locks on both doors on all models. Also in HK the standard became the belmont and the special became the kingswood.
