G'day,
I have just taken motor out and found that the Trimatic gear box bell Housing was bodgie bolted to engine,four of the bell housing bolt holes didnot line up to my 308 red motor,the bell housing part no is:5258295 is this a not the correct item. Please assistance would be greatful.

you probably have a chev pattern 308 block.
my guess it that the only 2 bolts that line up are the bottom ones on either side.

If this is so, being a Chev Pattern 308 do they make a bellhousing for Trimatic box if yes does anyone know part number.

GMH never made one but there is aftermarket versions available that I have heard about. The Trimatic was fitted to some North American cars as a TH180 from memory, probably 6cyl cars like a Nova, so you may be able to find one in Canada or the USA as Chev 6cyl use the same bellhousing as a SBC V8.

An interesting hybrid comes from Sth Africa. In the 70s they made a 4-cyl cut-down version of the Chev 6-cyl (like our Starfire). It still had the SBC bolt pattern & used a Tri-Matic. AFIAK the Tri-Matic was Aussie-sourced, so the SBC bellhousing may also be Aussie-sourced.

Yes, the Tri-Matic has many derivatives.

The TH180/3L30 was used in many European cars, anything from Fiats to Volvos & Rovers.

The 4L30 IS the 4-sp version & it again was used in Euro cars like BMW 3 & 5 Series. It was also used in the 2.0 4-cyl VN Commodore for NZ & other export markets.

The 5-sp version (5L40) was used behind the VZ/VE Alloytec V6 in Calais etc.

The 6-sp version (6L50) is used behind the SIDI V6 in late VE.

So the current 6-sp VE SIDI auto trans can trace its ancestry back to the original Tri-Matic.

I wonder if the bellhousing off a HT-VL 6cyl or V8 would fit one of the later boxes?

HK1837 from memory I would say no to the early bell housings fitting these box's.
I have a few pictures of the alloy tech engine and box out of a car here if anyone wants to look at one.

change it to a T350 or T400 or Powerglide, anything but a trimatic.

Adam, you're still living in the 70s. Tri-Matics are a very good & strong box in their own right. Most of the old issues were with clutch materials & valve body set-up.

The gear-set can take more torque than a TH350 & many are used in serious drag racing behind some very stout turbo engines.

For the street, behind any Holden engine a Tri-Matic is a great choice. Why convert ?

The TH400 is great choice for mega HP engines but is a real power sucker & has poor 1st gear kickdown for street applications. Powerglides again are great for drag racing but not a good choice for the street with only 2 forward ratios.

yes i probably am still living in the 1970's

T400 has poor kickdown for street? - adjust it. easy
the trimatic is a very hard shifting box compared to the T350 / T400. Just drive thru a surburban round-about and see which one is smooth.

I find the trimatic good behind a 6 cyl, but behind a V8 they tend to shift too hard.

I read somewhere the names for the boxes is from how much torque they were designed to take e.g TH180(trimatic) = 180 Ft / lb, TH 375 / 375 Ft /lb etc from an engineering point of view.

Also a good low -mid range 350chev + powerglide is a great combo on the street. I am a staunch 'Glide fan!

I brought a HJ statesman recently, L31 M41 plated, and when i drove it it shifted hard and i managed to talk the guy selling it down on price because of the way the box shifted.
The truth was, it was a 304 + trimatic, so it was just par for the course.

Adam, it's good to see somebody having a sensible debate on this topic.

With the TH400 kickdown, it's not a matter of simple adjustment, as you probably realise, they have a simple on-off switch which must actuate at full throttle. But the problem is, no matter how early you bring that switch in, the TH400 will not kick down above a certain road speed. One fix is to modify the governor, but that alters a few other aspects, so it's all a compromise. Ask any automatic guy, they just don't kick down into 1st as well as a TH350 or Tri-Matic.

The harshness of the shift in Tri-Matics can be altered by valve body mods. Test drive a stock late HDT VK/VL or Magnum auto to see how well a V8 Tri-Matic can be made to drive.

My point about the Powerglide being a poor choice for the street is just the lack of an intermediate gear. At 80-100 km/h when you nail it, you either stay in top or rev its ring out in 1st.

The TH180 differs from the Tri-Matic in its gear-set. The TH180 gear-set was used in the very early (LC/HG) cable kickdown units & was a lot weaker than the later Aussie built version.

ok, i actually serviced the HJ statesman with the VJ prefix 304 and timatic (which i assume is VL trimatic)transmission today and after driving it for 20 km tonite it shifted really well and one of the best trimatics i have ever driven. it brought a smile to my face how good it was.

VJ is the VL 304, and as you've seen, the Doc is spot on - VL V8 & trimatic are quite a nice combination, and I prefer them even to the later 4L60E used in VR/VS. Come to think of it, the trimatic works better (shift & kickdown) than the last 4L60E incarnation in the VE I drive too.

hi guys i have a trimatic that bangs into drive from park or neutral even when I set the idle speed rediculously low. it seems to have correct level of fluid and runs fine in every other way except shifting into drive. Any ideas??? I adjusted the bands in it quite a while ago but it doesn't hesitate to go into reverse at all....and it doesn't feel as though the bands are too tight as it doesn't have a braking feel when coasting but if it was too tight could this be a symptom? thanks!

I used to have a turbo 400 on the back of my ute ... Great for towing and solid gear box.

My mate had a solid tri with a solid engine so we decided to "switch over".


beside for he cross memeber and other mod we had to do.... I would say the main "thing" to do for a tri gear box would be to keep the tran as oil as cool as you can, the gear box seems to "get heavy" on the gear change as the tranny heats up. (this is city driving stop start on a 35+ day), yes i do have a tran cooler.

The Tri and it has not failed me, dont know about towing and under heavy load, but would love some advice on this....
