Hey all just wondering if I have this right from what info I've gathered together regarding a statesman I've recently acquired, its incomplete body and interior wise but heres what I have so far.
Build Plate
Model: 4669QR
Body No: 809986-S
Trim: 1869-39M
Paint: 567-15336
Top: (nothing here)

Engine: L30. Trans M41. Axle (N/A again).
Chassis: EHQ147875 - Although I cant find that anywhere.
heres the funny thing: according to the rego papers it has no VIN number, but it has a VIN plate:
8T69UDH809986Q

1 - Is this usual?

From what I can tell from the net its a Chevrolet badged statesman export model built in sydney.
originally it was metallic sabre silver with no vinyl roof and chestnut coloured devereaux cloth interior? is this the same thats also termed as "brocaade cloth?

factory 350 chev and TH400 box. not sure yet if its the original motor in there.

A few questions!
2 - does anyone have anything to add or correct me on here? just put me on the right path is all I ask thanks.

I'll be attempting to source the original grille and a few other things along the way

I know that most South Aussie HQ and even up to HZ did not have the chassis/vin number recorded on rego papers, I wrote it down on a transfer once and their data base didn`t like it so i changed it to `not recorded` and all was well.
The HQ`s had a couple of different cloths ,Brocade generally statesman deville ,diamond cloth optional in prem/ls coupe but possibly for statesman, royal cord was also optional trim in prem/ls and possibly others.

To my knowledge Brocade was only fitted to HK/T Broughams.

HG Brougham had Bavere cloth.

71/72 DeVille had Diamond Weave

73/74 DeVille had Devereaux.

This particular car may well have had something else (even Brocade), because as I often point out these cars are NOT Statesmans. The 4669 & 8WT69 codes point to it being a Caprice, in this case a Chevrolet Caprice. Yes, I realise it shares its body with a Holden Statesman, but it's sold as a Chevrolet Caprice.

AFIAK, all NZ built & Sth African built Holdens & Chevs did not get an Aussie style chassis number for ID.

Hi , do you know the rego number? This car is 1972--1974 series Chevrolet 350 , they had the caprice build code but were not called caprice , they were Chevrolet 350 . Trim in these cars seems to mirror normal statesman production . None of these were built in NZ all aussy imports . Mark.

No, I beg to differ Only South Australian assembled as complete cars (not CKD) to South Africa were Caprice 350's. A total of 668 units.
All of these were fitted with 12 bolt Diff, TH400 with Console shift only, Central door locking, Clarion 4 speaker Radio/Cassette, Brocade seats.

There seems to be a bit of conjecture regarding these cars. Years ago on here I stated that the export cars had no indentations in the rear bumper where the patterned inserts normally sit on a Deville and I was corrected.

OZcchevy's car clearly shows the lack of indentations but Gregs car clearly shows the indentations.

It looks like there were two different type of 350 export Chevrolets (Statesman bodied that is).

Jim,

I would say that Greg's has probably had its bumper replaced with a Statesman one sometime in its life. The rest of both cars look quite similar in features. Interesting that the antenna is on drivers side.

You certainly would not be the first to make that comment. As I stated - 668 vehicles were badged just as mine is and sent to South Africa. This is what is known as a South African Export. Wheels magazine covered a story on what they found in a back section of the Port Elizabeth plant in 1974. All the cars they saw were marked for South Africa. Others were sent to Trinidad, South East Asia, New Zealand, and two even went to Fiji, either as CKD's or fully assembled but were assembled in Sydney - these were not badged as Caprice. My car has had three owners only. 1st was NZ Consulate in South Africa, 2nd owner was my Father, and then me. The then Ambassadore bought the car into NZ as his own private vehicle after leaving his post in 1981, In 84 my Father bought the car through Ebbett Waikato, (Holden Dealer) two days after it arrived on their yard, and I bought it into Australia as a Personal Import in 92. I have on occassions for a few members of this site copied the glove box handbook for it. I also have the parts book you mention. Interesting that the inclusions to Caprice do not make the manual, as is the rated Brake Horsepower. Parts Manual states 275 HP, Owners glovebox manual states 295 HP. Vin Plate for Chev 350 would be 8S69, Chev 350 Caprice is 8T69.
Anyway - I'm more than happy with what I've got, with only 71,000km on the clock it still goes as good as it did in 74.

The rear bumper thing is something I did not know about ? parts book says , HQ 350 --3426508 (strange number ), HQ s/man --2811522 , HQ Deville ---2811521 . Did HQ s/man custom not have inserts in rear bumper ? I have never seen a custom in NZ ( they were not a model we got ) . Mark.

I think in oz only the deville got the insert panels , you dont see customs here either quite rare, I last saw one back in the late 80`s a co-worker at GMH had one with a 202 in it.

That's a sad end to a rare & beautiful car that has survived almost 40 years but in reality that particular example should have been scrapped in the early 80's as it looked as bad then as it does on your photo's except for the bonnet which looks much worse on your photos than it did 27 years ago.

Yes that's right you can't save them all but you can as you say save others using the parts.

My daily driver that has served me well for 12 years may cop the same fate as the 5 speed and LPG system sold separately would be worth more than the trade in value of the car as a complete unit. That is as soon as I find something that I want.

Hey all, I have a statesman/chevrolet that i'm thinking of selling.

Background info; Originally bought as a project car about 14 years ago. When i got it, it had been off the road about about 2-3 years and had only been driven sparingly for several years before that. It was registered as a chev saloon.
It has been garaged or under cover since i bought it, but was outside for a couple of years before that.

Some details; Has a B&M quick shift, turbo 400 - worse for wear having sat so long, flared rear guards, fat tyres, I was told the engine is a 400 chev, electric windows, brocade seats, aircon, chev badges on door inserts, boot and rear pillars also the chev grille and rear bumper.

The truth is the old girl needs a total rebuild, there is some rust around the windscreen, and the rear quarters need replacing down low, but apart from that she is pretty much complete, floor pans solid and engine surprisingly good.

I was told I'm the 4th owner, first was a GM manager, the 2nd hotted it up - the 400 chev, flares etc, then the old guy i bought it off.

At the moment i'm just looking for levels of interest, and a rough idea, if possible, of what would be a fair price ?

any help would be greatly appreciated .
