Do you have a VS series 1, series 2, or series 3 statesman?
There's a difference in how you do it based on the model (the console & dash surround is different).

I'll assume series 1 (ran to Aug-96).
You do need to move the console back - you don't need to completely remove it though.
- Start by popping the power window switches out (thin screwdriver under the end) and removing them - unplug the short leads. - Open the ashtray & pull it out of it's hole. - Then lift up the armrest, and where the black vynil cover loops up & into the storage bin, pop out the 2 black plastic retainers (fir-tree style ones). - Now tilt that whole cover up (I call it the console cap), and pull it rearwards a little, to allow you to tilt it up more, and unplug the cigarette lighter wires (2 pin plug for the lighter, single wire for the globe - tough to undo). - Once the wires are undone, lift the cap clear of the handbrake, turn it sideways - rear end towards the steering wheel, then tilt it up(LH side upwards) to feed it up & over the gear knob. - Now look at the PRND321 strip, and it's matching LH side piece (with the power/eco button). Tape them together with a strip of masking tape top & bottom so you don't lose the location of them (it's adjustable). You don't need to remove them. - Undo the 4 screws holding the white plastic area around the gear lever - just undo the screws, you don't have to remove it (you can if you really want to. - Lift up the carpet in the armrest storage bin, and using a 10mm socket, undo the 2 nuts. - move the white plastic bit back a little to expose 2 large phillips head screws, and wind them out until the console drops enough below the dash to slide it back a couple of inches. - now undo the 3 srews along the bottom of the radio surround (the black part) and pull it towards you to remove it (it has some snap clips holding it as well). - Undo the single screw holding the climate module, and remove it - unplug the plugs on the back, and also unplug the aspirator tube - don't forget to put this tube back in when you refit it all back. - Open the glovebox, and remove the pivot pin on the RH end - use a flat-head screwdriver to pry it out, and another screwdriver as a pivot to get more leverage. - Remove the cover above the footwell (below the glovebox) and pop the retaining plug out of it that holds the stacker cable. - Unplug the stacker cable (big round brown plug on a blue lead) and leave it loose. - Open the fuse cover below the steering wheel using the key as the tool to rotate the retainers 90 degrees. Gently pulling on the cover while undoing the retainers helps them to pop out more easily. - remove the pivot on the fuse cover, just like you did on the glovebox. - undo the screws down each side of the central section (that the glovebox & fuse cover hid) and remove it. - Now you can undo the screws holding the radio brackets to the metal frame of the dash, and remove the radio - feeding the stacker cable through the framework of the dash.
A few points to clarify questions you may have when you get into the job: 1. Re-use the brackets on your new radio. 2. The steering wheel buttons will not work an aftermarket radio, but some can use a decoder box to link them (see a good car stereo place for advice). 3. It is 99% unlikely that the stacker is compatible with a new radio. 4. The stacker lead is not compatible with anything on the market today, so you'd need to run a new lead if you're fitting a stacker. 5. You will only use the larger of the 2 aerial plugs - the little one is for the rear glass diversity antenna. 6. Don't forget to re-fit the aspirator tube to the climate module - it is crucial for it's correct operation.
If you have a series 2 VS stato - distinguished by the convex tail lights with a chrome surround, a grille with no statesman badge (only the holden lion) and a different console - the ashtray lid hides the lighter, and the bit above the radio is a sunglass holder) then there's a few more steps. You need to undo the 2 phillips screws in the sunglass holder before removing the centre section, and the cap is a little harder to remove, but follows the same principle.
