Hi All
I have the steering wheel off the HZ at the moment as I am trying to fit an aftermarket one but at the same time I am looking into why the horn does not work. ( horn has never worked, just starting here as I have the wheel off).I have noticed that the steering shaft moves in about 3mm when pressed and was wondering if this is normal as it could be stopping the horn ring making contact.
thanks
Brian

Hi States-man,
the shaft moving in 3mm usually means that some idiot or un caring "person" has collapsed the centre shaft, sorry I cannot tell you what length it should be so you can check it.

unfortunately it is very difficult to find a centre shaft that has not either been droped on its end or hammered, someone will have to start to refurbish these one day!

There is a very small diameter nylon pin from the outer and inner parts of the shaft this gets sheered off when idiots use a hammer to loosen the steering wheel.
A hammer should never be used to loosen a steering wheel, a puller should be used always.

There are also small nylon pins in the aluminum attachment point half way down the collumn these can also be sheered by hammering.
Then there is the collapsable outer jacket of the collunm this can also be collapsed and should be checked if using one from a crashed car.

There are several ways that your horn does not work, firstly a blown fuse, then buggered horn, then no earth for the collumn, then also there is incorrectly fitting a wire on the ignition switch, in this case the horn only works when the engine is switched off.

If you insist on using an aftermarket steering wheel you need to watch that you place the indicator cancelling lugs in the same position and that the spline is correct, personally I fit the GTS ones then they fit properly and don't look tacky.

Hope this information answers your question.

Mike

hi states_man
i have a hj gts which had the same problem as you with steering shaft the way i got around it was to replace the honey pot which is where the ignition barrel sits in there is a bearing in there that when the shaft is hit with hammer it collapses as long as there is no other damage as mike81973 states you should be able to get away with it

Thanks: 2 times
Check out VH auto wreckers in Industrial Rd Oak Flats, I was in there the other day and he had a GTS steering wheel hanging up on the wall behind the counter. Dunno if they are still there but I've seen a couple of HJ's in the yard as well.
