G'day fellas, just wondering if anyone has attempted to do zinc plating at home and if so, how hard is it to do? Just asking as I have to do a truckload of parts for my HK resto.

It would be possible but you might want to contact your local council as to wether it would be legal with the hazards /chemicals etc. in a suburban area.

Hey there I never went through with it, but I spoke with this guy and it sounded fairly simple. http://www.janekits.com.au/mainframe.phpBut in the end it's not all that expensive to get done for a one off project. I've used the kits on my vintage MX bikes and the kits do work,as long as you have everything spotless.
Its good for doing small stuff but its very time consuming.
Personally if you are doing a car,its much easier to send it out and get it done professionally and not have to worry about chemicals(hydrocloric acid)to strip the coating,then it rusts within a few hours and have to go through the whole process again.
They are a good kit for hobby stuff,but for cars with bigger parts....send it out and you will have more time to work on other parts of the build.

gday hk 350 i do my own at home the kits for zinc plating are safe to use at home as they are an alkaline base not an acid base. hydrocloric acid is the bad type of acid which is used for stripping the old plating off which is not part of the kit but can be used to speed up the stripping process which is available from hardware retailers.i do the silver gold and black plating its not real easy to do and takes time to learn but once you know what your doing its very satisfying to be able to do your own plating at your own pace and not lose any parts as the plating shops normally do.and we all know how devastating this can be after paying top dollar for these rare parts.depending on your free time if you have plenty of it as cleaning parts is the down factor
